1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

Alpina or Alpina Tribute in Oregon?

UPDATE to the UPDATE 5/23/2014:  We know this Baur!  1rdmanahan1 sent me some pics on this long ago, but I failed to recognize the car!
This is one of those original pics.   Thank you, Ryne!  I owe you another one!  ;)

UPDATE 5/23/2014:  Thanks to the efforts of our friend, the indefatigable 1rdmanahan1 from bimmerforums, we have the VIN and more pics*!  Thank you, Ryne!

N.B.  True Alpinas**, i.e. those built by Alpina in Buchloe, Bavaria, Germany, are given a new Alpina VIN by Alpina, which is different from the original VIN given by BMW.  The VBIN pictured above is a BMW VIN, so we conclude that this is, indeed, an Alpina Tribute Baur, not a True Alpina.  Thank you, Ryne!

Thanks to Greg B. for posting this today in Facebook.  Originally posted by a friend of the owner (named Ron) in the r3v limited Facebook page with this comment:  "Friends baur alpina e21... Super clean! Any ideas what she's worth?"

We have seen many claims for "Alpina" Baurs.  We would need to see some authentic Provenance before we accept that this one is anything but an Alpina 'Tribute".  It is still a very nice example of an E21 Baur, however.

Baurspotting is ON THE CASE!  :)  We are actively seeking input from the knowledgeable folks out in the BMW and Baur communities.  We will keep you posted with what we find.

Thanks again to Greg B. for posting this!  We couldn't do this work without your help, Baurspotters!

*New pics 5/23/2014 from 1rdmanahan1:

And here is the decoded VIN:
**Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH is an automobile manufacturing company based in Buchloe, in the Ostallgäudistrict of BavariaGermany selling their own cars, based on BMW cars.
Alpina works closely with BMW and their processes are integrated into BMW's production lines, thus Alpina is recognized by TÜV as an automobile manufacturer, in contrast to other performance specialists which are aftermarket tuners. For instance, the Alpina B7 is produced at the same assembly line in Dingolfing, Germany, along with BMW's own 7-Series. For the 2011 model year, the B7's twin-turbo 4.4-litre BMW V8 is assembled by hand at Alpina's facility in Buchloe, Germany, before being shipped to BMW for installation, and the assembled vehicle is then sent back to Alpina for finishing touches.[1][2]

Stay tuned!

  1. Sorry for the delay in sharing that information with you. I sniffed this one out a few years ago and thought I had shared it with you.

  2. Ryne, you are absolutely correct! And you DID share it, I just didn't recognize it, I just found it. Mea culpa. The pics I had saved were not as good as the ones you posted now, so I just failed to recognize it. I owe you another one! ;)
    Thank you!
