SAN JOSE -- Authorities have identified a man killed Monday when while working on a car in his driveway, the jack holding it up failed, dropping the vehicle on him and also pinning a child who survived the tragic accident.
An emergency was reported about 5:50 p.m. in the 3600 block of Slopeview Drive, off Norwood Avenue toward the East San Jose foothills, where police and firefighters found a man underneath a Ford Mustang and a 5-year-old girl pinned by the car.
Firefighters were able to safely remove the girl, who suffered minor injuries. The man was taken to the hospital, where he died about an hour later. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office identified him as Edward Cotriss, 69, of San Jose.
An initial investigation found that Cotriss was working under the car when a hydraulic jack failed. San Jose police ruled the death an accident.
