We have been watching this one for the past couple of days. Thanks to Paul, Afonso and Andrew for sending me a heads up on it! We need all the help we can get to keep up with
this stuff! Much appreciated, fellas! :)
This car looks overall pretty good.... but I am not crazy about all the black stuff on the shock towers.... is that undercoating, or POR-15? The restoration work looks pretty thorough, so perhaps I am just being too picky. Check it out!
The bidding is plodding along with 3 days to go.
OK.... I admit it. I kinda like it. :) These don't come up very often in my neighborhood.... :)
"1975 BMW 2002 BAUR TARGA CABRIOLET
1975 BMW 2002 Base Coupe 2-Door 2.0L
INCREDIBLY RARE MODEL IN EXCELLENT CONDITION!!"
Very Rare 1975 BMW 2002 Baur Targa Cabriolet Reluctantly Offered for Sale by Private Owner. The Baur 2002s are incredibly rare vehicles; out of roughly 500,000 2002s that were produced, only 2,500 were targas (roughly 1,800 left hand drive and 700 right hand drive). Given the low survival rate, very few likely still exist. Moreover, the car was never officially imported to North America. Car was extensively refurbished (basically a complete overhaul of body and mechanicals) in Europe in the late 1990s and imported by me into Canada at that time. Please bear in mind that the purposes of the restoration was to render the car in excellent driving condition, and not intended for show or concours purposes. There likely was some filler applied to the body at this time but the bodywork has held up very well. In the interest of full disclosure, you can refer to more than 100 additional photos of the restoration below.

Since then, the car has been seasonally driven only, with total mileage of approximately 20,000 kms in the past fifteen years or so. The original color was Pastellblau, but I had the color changed to metallic silver. The paint is in very good driver quality condition with no obvious blemishes and no visible rust. The bumpers (obviously European and not the U.S. monstrosities) were also rechromed and are in excellent condition, with new bumper rubber also ordered at the time. With respect to the interior, it was trimmed entirely (including the seat backs and door panels) in two-tone leather. I have periodically treated the leather with conditioner and the interior has held up very well. The interior carpet and trunk upholstery were also replaced. The dash is original and in good condition with no cracks; the only blemish is a slight dent at the top of the lockable glove box, (visible in the appropriate photo). All gauges and lights are fully functional. The car runs and drives very well. The engine pulls strong (no smoke during acceleration or at highway speeds). Transmission / synchros are excellent. Car pulls and brakes straight. There is a very small chip in the front windshield at the driver's side, but this has been repaired and the chip has not spread. Since importing the car to Canada, various work has also been done, including (in no particular order) the following: new belt-trim chrome, new front Bilstein shocks, new soft top, new seals around the targa top; 123 ignition fitted; ( I also have the original ignition). Clarion head unit (no CD) with USB and Bluetooth fitted. The rims have also been refinished - there is no curb rash at all. The wheels are made by ATS, (I did not have any center caps but finally bought some black generic center caps and have applied the BMW logo to these). Vredestein tires are also essentially new; (i.e. less than 2000 kms on them). The front hood on the car is also new. (This is not due to an accident but rather a function of an incompetent tow truck driver who towed the car on a flat bed facing rearward with the hood unlocked; I'll spare the remaining details...) The car does not need anything and can be more than enjoyed in its current condition. (To me, at least, if I were to do more work on the car...the first thing I would probably tackle is the brightwork around the windshield and also around the doors; these pieces are original and have not been refurbished.) I should also mention that the car does have various leaks, but these are minor and would be expected for a car of this vintage. The car is essentially stock, with the exception of the interior being trimmed in leather and the Clarion head unit. The car is also fitted with front and rear fog-lights. I am very happy with these as the front fog lights are attached by brackets to the frame of the car and thus do not wobble during driving and the rear fog-lights are brand new high intensity LED lights by PIAA; (these greatly increase the visibility of the car at night!). As this is the first time I have tried to sell a vehicle through e-bay I have attempted to point out the car's strength and weaknesses, but at the end of day, this is a very RARE, collectible automobile in excellent driving condition that needs NOTHING!! The car is an absolute joy to drive and own. Another plus is that despite its rarity, mechanical parts are readily available given the ongoing popularity that the 2002 models enjoy; (for that matter, even most of the unique cabrio trim / parts are still available from select sources). Unfortunately, family duties at this point make it difficult for me to justify keeping the car any longer, which is why it is being offered for sale. I will try to answer any additional questions as best as I can. The car can be inspected locally during the course of the auction, however, please, serious inquiries only!! If sold locally, I will include a safety certificate, (as the car needs nothing in any event). In the event of a long-distance/international sale, I will assist the buyer in arranging transport, but ultimately this is the responsibility of and for the account of the buyer. GOOD LUCK!!
