1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

GENUINE OEM BMW E21 and E30 Sedan Door Moulding BAUR Emblem Badge New

I am posting this as  Public Service message, in case anyone is in need of the the Baur emblem badge that attaches at the "B" pillar for both the E21 (TC1) and the E30 (TC2).    I found them today on eBay.  I have no interest or affiliation in the sale, btw.  They are different, so please check to make sure you get the appropriate one for your Baur.  ;)

Here is the E21 TC1 Badge:

  1. Did SA Baurs come with these emblems, too? Our E30 325 (not a 325i although it does have injection!) Doesn't have any Baur emblems...
Of course, they could have been removed at some point.

    1. I believe that you may be correct, Graham. I know that the South African-built Baurs do not have the Baur plate with a Baur number inside the door jamb that the Stuttgart-built Baurs have. I think that the Baur badge that appears on the B pillar of the Stuttgart built Baurs does NOT appear on the SA-built versions. There are other differences, also. For example, in the SA-built Baurs, the Baur roof frame matches the body color; Stuttgart-built bars have a black roof frame.

    2. Thanks Tom. Interesting detail about the roof frame colour - are you referring to the rear folding roof, or the frame connecting the B-pillars?
We're struggling to hold on to our car at present - economic reasons - but if we do, I'll be into refitting the rear roof. It has been replaced at some point but now doesn't pull forward quite as far as it should, leaving a 1/4" seam between the soft roof and the hard panel.

  2. I am referring to the entire Baur roof frame, from the C pillar to the front windshield. It is covered when the roof is on, so you can't see the color. But when the soft top is down, you can see that it is body color. As far as the gap between the hard top and soft roof, there should be a gasket there to seal that gap. That gasket may be available through the BMW Classic Center at your BMW dealer, or, if not, you may have to contact BMW Germany directly.

  3. The apparent reason for the difference in frame color is in the build process: Stuttgart Baurs are painted and then converted, so the Baur frames remain black; the South African-built Baurs are converted and THEN painted, so that the Baur frame matches the body color, from what I am told.

  4. That sounds reasonable.
On an unrelated topic, you could say that makes a SA Baur more of a 'real' Baur than the converted BMWs from Germany... ;)
(I'm joking - obviously - but I have been told that SA Baurs aren't 'real' Baurs.)

Getting back to the roof - the gasket is there. It's just that it seems the rear, folding, part of the roof is 1/4" short, doesn't pull forward quite far enough, or similar.
I tried to adjust this on the clamps and broke the hollow rivets which secure the clamp. I've replaced these with 4mm slot-head machine screws, washers, and nylock nuts.
