1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

The following translation is from Denis!  Thank you, Denis!
The translation, here is the first bit:
"BMW 320I BAUR TC2 E30: 7 YEARS OF FUN AND STILL GOING STRONG
We will introduce you to the BMW 320i E30 Baur. Denis has had this car for 7 years and traveled 28,000 km. It now shows 216,000 km on the clock and the pleasure of taking the wheel remains intact.

The car :
Car crazy since a very early age, my first true encounter with a BMW took place during the summer holidays of 1978 in a small island of the Mediterranean.
A trip in a Colorado orange BMW 2002Tii as passenger stays in my memory. I was immediately hooked by the German brand during this trip. A few years later, I got the catalog of the 1983BMW 3 Series the E30 type. Flipping through the pages, I stopped  in front of the picture of a Baur convertible. It's love at first sight looking at a Baur convertible: black with beige cloth interior.

Hi Tom, here is the second part:
I became a BMW owner in 1994, when I bought my first E30: a four-door Diamantschwartz 318i in very good condition. I was really proud to have this car as a student. It enabled me to learn how to drive a rear wheel drive car. After a few  different cars, I went back to BMW, becoming the owner of two successive E36 316i Compact.

The years passed but the automobile bug remained intact. In 2009 after selling my Lancia Montecarlo, I wanted a fun car for the holiday. I wanted to buy a BMW 3 Series E30 Convertible Baur, the same that had caught my sight as a kid. Browsing through car ads on the web, a red 316i Baur Phase 2 seemed  . The car was far from home but some people in my family could go and see it. Their verdict was clear: "forget this car, it is in a very bad condition." The search continued. I then came across a four-door 320i with many options but the car was really rusty, having lived in the mountains.

Then things got off. Somebody I knew had an E30 320i Baur. The car was in a very good condition. He called me one day and gave me an appointment at a garage that maintained our cars. He wanted to sell his car but at his price. No negotiation was possible. I couldn't resist this 320i Baur gleaming in front of my eyes. It reminded me of childhood memories. The price was in accordance to the market. So I said yes and bought the car on the spot.

Sometimes little details can have great influence. One of them: the quad yellow lights that reminded me of the BMW 323i E30 two-door from the eighties movie "Les spécialistes" with Bernard Giraudeau and Gérard Lanvin.

Driving and performance:
This BMW 320i E30 Baur is not lightning quick with its 125hp engine and its long geared 5th ratio. But the car remains swift thanks to its low weight. It also has character and is a great pleasure to drive, mile after mile.

The engine sound of the straight-six is really addictive. This aural delight increases when the roof is down. This is a real BMW as one thinks it should be. Its handling is good even in the wet. This is contrary to the reputation of the E30 but reflects my experience.

3rd part:
Comfort and equipment:
The car is well designed in every detail. For example, I can mention its fuse box, tidy and rational. Miles away from what you could see in the Italian cars of the same era that I owned. The quality of the finish is one of the highlights of this BMW 320i Baur.

The car is the good size for me, neither too small nor too large. Its boot is large and convenient. It begs to be driven and cover long distances. I drove it on long journeys without being tired. I have been to the French Riviera, Corsica, Italyand to several editions of Le Mans Classic.

The Baur Convertible also offers seating for four or five people. So, many passengers have enjoyed the pleasure of wind in the air motoring aboard my BMW. That's nice sharing that with friends and family.

Quality and costs:
My Baur is now over 30 years old but I never fear of using it as often and as far as I can.

In seven years of ownership, I have had no real problems with the reliability of this car.Except and only once. The engine had jerks and it just refused to rev above 2500 rpm. The problem disappeared and came back. It led me to replace some fuel hoses and the fuel pump. In the end I disovered the cause was simply the battery not charging, thus it was replaced with a new one. The morale of the story is that sometimes you should control the basic things rather than go looking for problems where there are none.

4th part and final part:
I have had no mechanical failure. In the end, the cost of maintaining this car is really reduced. You just need to do routine maintenance such as the oil change. Last year I bought new tires and Bilstein B6 shock absorbers. Petrol consumption is really good. The BMW 320i E30 is a vintage car with a reasonable budget. I have at heart to keep this car in original condition: no wider rims or shortened springs for me!

The owner's story:
More than an anecdote, it's a memory that I want to share. It was a magical arrival at Lake Como in the north of Italy. Everything was perfect: driving the right car at the right place at the right time, with the right person. I wouldn't have liked another car!

My BMW 320i convertible E30 Baur has brought me lots of good memories and happiness for seven years. I don't plan to part with it even if I could have in a much more expensive car.

This is a classy car while remaining simple at the same time. It exudes a unique character and gives me a smile every time I find myself behind the wheel."

  1. Great profile, I didn't know these were so rare. There are 3 i know of in St. Thomas USVI, present condition unknown. 1 was garaged kept in pristine condition (blue '91 5 speed if I recall correctly). I will check into it and follow up with some pictures next time I visit the island.

    1. Please do! USVI is a perfect place for a Baur, and I don't think we have any listed on record yet. Thank you very much for responding, and we look forward to seeing what you can find!
