1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

Recently Sold In The UK: Baur #1204, 1979 BMW E21 E21 316 Baur

This Baur was recently sold in Kingsley, a town southwest of London.  Baur #1204. No other details available, other than what is in the ad below, except that it is listed in the Baur Registries.

Here is the ad:
SOLD: A striking E21 Baur convertible, black with black, just 84k miles.

EQUIPMENT
Baur cabriolet top in black mohair, Baur numbered plaque (No. 1204), Cover for folding roof, Light alloy wheels, Electric door mirrors, Blaupunkt CD player, Electric aerial, Cigarette lighter, Ashtray, Wooden gear knob, Analogue clock, 13-inch Mahle spare wheel, BMW toolkit, Jack.

EXTERIOR
The glossy Schwarz paintwork retains a deep black finish, looking really smart against those period seventies lines. The body is in superb shape throughout having been treated to a professional cosmetic refresh by the previous owner. There is also no corrosion to be found in any of the usual E21 weak spots, and all of the shut lines remain true. Furthermore, the Baur top has not long been re-trimmed and now presents in perfect condition. A pristine black cover protects the hood when folded down, while the targa roof panel can be neatly slid inside the boot when not in use.

INTERIOR
The E21 really does look the part both inside and out. The black/black combination is striking to say the least, and the interior certainly does not disappoint. Given the car's age and mileage the black velour remains in very nice condition, with only minor wear to driver's bolster to be found. The vinyl door panels and textured carpets are extremely good too, and are free from any discolouration. The dash is also without any cracks or distortion.

In the boot area you'll find an unmarked carpet covering the 13-inch Mahle spare wheel and original jack. As with the exterior bodywork the boot area is also corrosion-free. There are no areas of rust to the rear top mounts, arches, or boot floor, all common E21 weak points.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The peppy little 1.6 performs well, and idles up to temperature nicely. Benefitting from a full service less than 500 miles ago the engine remains in excellent fettle. The under-bonnet area is also really clean and tidy with no structural corrosion to either the chassis rails or inner arches. A light mechanical recomissioning was carried out in April this year totaling over £1,700.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The E21 sits on 13-inch light alloy wheels. They are finished with the correct grey centres and chrome BMW caps, and all present in excellent condition. None of the alloys show any signs of curb marking or age-related wear, and all of the tyres have ample tread remaining. The front discs were replaced in April this year as were both steering tie rods and all four shock absorber dampers. The rear brakes were checked over, cleaned, and adjusted little over 200 miles ago.

HISTORY FILE
The E21 was originally supplied by, and first registered to, Richard Cound Ltd on 1st January 1979 (Richard Cound being one of the UK's first BMW dealerships, having opened in 1971). The car was then run as a demonstrator until it was sold to its first private keeper, a Saudi Prince, in April 1979. It is understood that he commissioned the Baur conversion.

Present in the history file is the original BMW document pack with all the relevant manuals. The dealer-supplied service booklet is also present, as is the Baur owner's manual. Correspondence from the DVLA details the ownership history and numerous MOT certificates confirm the vehicle's mileage. Present also is also a raft of invoices from over the years. The recorded service history is at the following mileage intervals:

10,096 miles
17,479 miles
22,055 miles
48,400 miles
75,318 miles
83,900 miles
84,274 miles
