Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

Working Safely: Falling Jack Stands/Car Lift Videos

OK, boys and girls..... it's that time again. The warm weather is upon us, and many of us will be out there again, tinkering over and under our vehicles. Although some may get tired of hearing me beat this drum about safety, I never get tired of saying it:  safety first, safety last, safety always.

BMW M1 Concept

Yikes.

http://bekaskailestrek.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Ok, fellas. scroll past the eye candy to the M1 Concept.

wtf?

I mean.... wow.

I mean.... Yikes!

"The BMW M1 was the latest BMW amongst the series to have an engine in rear center position. This model has been revisited through the BMW M1 Homage in 2008. The model series of the BMW Concept is still awaited but it would be interesting to imagine what would be a model of sport entry level by the German manufacturer, a car smaller and more accessible than the legendary M1 and which would compete with the Porsche Cayman or Audi TT. This concept could be equipped with a V8 (the one of the next M5) combined with a manual gearbox or 7-speed automatic. And in the continuity of BMW concepts in recent years (Active E & Vision Efficienct Dynamics Concept) a hybrid version would complement the offer."

the CAR, fellas... the CAR!

Whoa! An AMERICAN-BUILT Four Wheel Drive Baur-Type Convertible!

Whoa.

Readers of this blog may be aware that I have lamented on a number of occasions the fact that one of my favorite cars, the BMW E30 325iX Baur, was produced in extremely limited numbers (about 115 or so---- I can never remember exactly how many), and NONE were ever imported to the US.

Well, thanks to Mike and Lore E., I have uncovered some startling information!  There has been an 4WD Baur-type convertible right under our noses, and.... it has been there for over 30 years!

OK, so it doesn't have the looks, or the cachet, of the BMW E30, or the Baur nameplate, but.... if you are indeed looking for an 4WD Baur-Type convertible without having to import one from Europe... here it is!
They are quite rare and reportedly often leak. They can switch from two wheel drive to four wheel drive, so they are technically NOT AWD. It appears the four wheel drive system was called "Select Drive". That is one of the same names that Jeep used for its 4 wheel drive system years ago. American Motors (AMC) which manufactured the Eagle, also made the Jeep, you will recall. They were later bought out by Chrysler, which dropped the Eagle, but kept the Jeep.
So, this AMC Eagle appears to be the venerated Jeep's cousin. Day um. Learn something new every day!
:)

Convertibles

1981 AMC Eagle Convertible
During 1981 and 1982, a Sundancer conversion convertible was available. The Eagle's monocoque (unibody) body was reinforced and a steel targa roll bar was welded to the door pillars for passenger compartment protection. The front portion of the roof was a removable lightweight fiberglass hatch, while the rear section of polyvinyl material and the back window folded down and had a boot cover when in the down position.[37]
The conversions were approved by AMC with the cars ordered through select AMC dealers in the customer's selection of options and colors.[38] The conversion cost approximately $3,000 and the dealer's list price was $3,750.[39] The conversion was performed by the Griffith Company headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, that was also responsible for the "Sunchaser" Toyota Celica convertible.[40] Both Griffith conversions are considered coach convertibles.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Eagle

Rare AMC Eagle Sundancer is ultra-weird fun in the sun:

We aren't sure there is such a thing as a normal AMC Eagle, but we feel safe saying other models of the 4x4 car were a lot less strange than this Sundancer convertible model. These convertible Eagles were offered through AMC dealers as an expensive coach built option for only two years. The Eagle's notoriously rust prone nature combined with the very low initial production numbers makes surviving Sundancers like this one currently on Ebay very rare birds.
AMC Eagles were the perfect vehicles for people who wanted all the convenience and capability of a four wheel drive vehicle in a strange automotive package. For 1981, AMC decided to make that automotive package a little stranger by adding the Sundancer option. Eagle buyers that checked the $3750 option got their new AMC with a Targa roll bar, fold down rear roof and lift off plastic top in place of its conventional roof sheet metal.
According to various internet sources, approximately 200 Eagles with the Sundancer option were produced in 1981 and sold throughout the 1981 and 1982 model years. No one knows exactly how many survived, but almost none is a pretty safe guess. How this particular Eagle Sundancer managed to avoid the fate of so many others is unknown but if the car's current Sacramento, Ca location suggests a life spent far outside the rust belt.
The owner doesn't specify much about this AMC besides the fact it has been well taken care of and runs as good as it looks. Bidding for this rare Eagle Sundancer has already reached $6299 with over five days left on the auction. Even though it isn't the most desirable vehicle, anyone who wants this interesting AMC will have to bid to win because who knows when the next time another one will come up for sale.

1972 E25 BMW TURBO Prototype

I came across this the other day, and it was new to me.  I  thought some of you may enjoy learning about it.  I believe those are the only two E25 Turbo Prototypes ever built.

So what is it doing here in Baurspotting?  Well, it has certain styling cues that remind me of the M1 and even the 850. And you may recall that most of the M1s were built by Baur, based on a design by Giugiaro, after Lamborghini was financially unable to complete it.

Here is a pic of the M1 for comparison:

BMW Turbo

The E25 BMW TURBO prototype was built as a celebration for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. (See below for another car BMW introduced for the 1972 Olympics!  Hint:  it didn't use gasoline.) For this occasion, renowned designer Paul Bracq created an innovative design for a BMW automobile, the BMW Turbo. The car had a 1,990cc BMW 4 cylinder engine, with a Turbo fitted. The car weighed just 980kg and featured gullwing doors and an ergonomically considered interior. Safety was another consideration in it's design, with an integrated passenger rollcage, crash safe deformable structures front and rear of the car and a collapsable steering column, thanks to 3 universal joints. The BMW Turbo was built by Michelotti in Turin and only 2 cars were ever built.

Our Man in California: Baurspotting at Moran Motorsport today!

Ok, folks.  Baurspotting is pleased to announce that we have tracked down that Baur seen a while back in Moran Motorsports showroom in Berkeley, CA.  Here is the link to our original post on February 18, 2012, thanks to alert Baurspotter, HenryHide1886.

We have one of our Best Men on the case, as we speak, in the person of my son, Brian.  :)  He is visiting friends in California, and graciously accepted my request to take a run over to Moran Motorsport in Berkeley, CA to check out this Baur, and whatever else they have that might be of interest.

This evening he sent the pic above of the Baur in the Moran showroom!  A 323i Baur!  He also sent the following pics, before his battery ran low.  He will send more in the next few days, so stay tuned!

Note that there is no Baur badge on the "B" pillar.  Was it removed by an owner for repainting, possibly?  Or was it never there?

Thanks, Brian!

Hot Rod Heaven: Baurspotting at the Spring Grand Rod Run in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee April 2012

This is the first pic of many more to come:  a Low Rider Woodie Willys that I saw at the Spring Grand Rod Run, Pigeon Forge, TN on April 11, 2012.  It doesn't GET any lower than THAT!!  :)  Awesome!

My wife and I have just returned from a little vacation in the Carolinas, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  By an extraordinary twist of Fate, we happened to be in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week.  Totally unbeknownst to me (I swear!), that also happened to be the beginning of the Spring Grand Rod Run in Pigeon Forge. !!!  An extraordinarily happy coincidence!

We arrived at our B&B in Pigeon Forge late in the afternoon on Tuesday, after spending a glorious morning touring the Civil War battle site of Lookout Mountain, above Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Simply spectacular, btw, particularly for any American Civil War buffs (like me) out there.

So a little later that evening we were cruising The Parkway in Pigeon Forge looking for a bite to eat.  Traffic in the right lane was moving at a snail's pace, for reasons unknown to me..... until I noticed that there appeared to be a good number of 'classic' and 'hot rod' cars parked all along the street. We were actually in the line of traffic that was slowed because everyone was observing the cars that were on display.

The Parkway is the main strip in Pigeon Forge.  It is at least six lanes wide, with a grassy median down the middle with turning lanes.  It is at least a mile long, with wall to wall tourist attractions (read: tourist traps) lining both sides of the street.  All the businesses, however, are set back from the roadway a good distance, allowing for one or two rows of off street parking, as well as a travel lane (or two) for access to the parking area.  This off street parking area is very conducive to roadside displays, such as car shows.  My understanding is that the local government actually reserves this area for exactly that!  The two innermost lanes of the Parkway are generally well-moving thru-traffic lanes, but the out side lane is usually slow moving. Why? The outside lane is filled bumper to bumper with rubbernecking sightseers!  Now just imagine for a moment a mile-long strip (in each direction!) loaded cheek-to-jowl with the most amazing collection of hot rods, muscle cars, rat rods, custom coupes, and antique cars and trucks from the past 100 years..... Welcome to the 2012 Spring Grand Rod Run in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee!  Hot Rod Heaven!

Now, let me tell you... I have been to car shows before... I love them! But I have NEVER seen anything like this: there were literally THOUSANDS of hot rods of every size and shape imaginable on display for all to see.... absolutely free! They were parked along the Parkway for literally a mile or more, sometimes in rows two or three deep!  If nothing else, this show firmed my resolve, to one of these years, making it down to Carlisle, PA for one of their big shows!

I was literally in awe, mouth agape, at the awesome display laid out before me.  Camaros, Mustangs, Firebirds, Road Runners (my personal favorite), Super Birds, Chargers, Chevelle Super Sports, GTOs,... of every possible color... hoods open, revving those awesome muscle engines.... but this was only the beginning!
Chevy Nomad

Words fail to convey the wide variety of muscle cars, rat rods, t-buckets, trucks, custom coupes, etc. that were on street display this week.  On Thursday morning, I took a little time to cruise through the show on my own, before we took our planned trip up into the Great Smokies (which was actually the purpose of our visit).  After about 15 minutes I was on total sensory overload:   it was just an incredible show!  It is not humanly possible (for me anyway) to list the array of amazing automobiles that I saw that morning!  You name it.... there were probably a dozen of them there!  Dodge trucks?  original stock, beautiful patina, tricked out, hot rods?  Check, check and check!  They were ALL there!  Studebaker custom rods? Check! I saw two for sure!  Ford Sunliner, T-Birds, Edsel Station Wagon... the list goes on and on!!

I have included a few pics below, but please check out the linked website, or better yet.... check out the future shows planned down in that area, and plan to attend one of them.

1937 Ford Custom Coupe

1950 Studebaker

A Classic Pair!

Classic Ford Hot Rod

It is worth noting that the cars I saw were all "Southern" cars:  most of the license plates were from North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, etc.  largely rust-free examples.  This is the land of the original Moonshiners, birthplace of NASCAR.... we are talking SERIOUS gearheads here, fellas!  I expected to see the the General Lee drive by with the Dukes of Hazzard at any moment!

Here is a little video of the 2011 Spring Grand Rod Run, just to give you a taste of what it is like:

Enjoy!
Edsel Station Wagon

Classic Ford Truck

http://www.insidepigeonforge.com/car-shows/spring-grand-rod-run-in-pigeon-forge-tn/

The street was, not surprisingly, overwhelmingly dominated by American Iron.... and it was really an awesome display!  But I did manage to spot a few 'furrin' gems:

1937 Bentley

Mercedes 450 SL

Triumph Stag

This 2002 was the only Bimmer I saw anywhere on the street!

We literally stumbled into this Spring Grand Run by accident.  My understanding from talking with the locals is that car shows of various types are a fairly regular occurrence in Pigeon Forge.  If you happen to be travelling or vacationing in the area, I strongly recommend checking out their car show schedule.  you may be very pleasantly surprised, as I was this week.  I only wished I had more time to spend there, to really do the Spring Grand Rod Run justice!
