Calling All Baurs!

I received this email today from the Newsletter editor of the Connecticut Valley Chapter, BMW CCA:


"Tom,
If you succeed in gathering a collection of Baur's, I would be VERY interested in shooting some photos and getting an article for the CT Valley newsletter.

Please let me know if this thing comes together."

The Connecticut show is this Sunday, July 10 in Manchester, CT. I plan to attend, and Afonso (humble apologies for misspelling your name previously), the owner of the only other known Baur in CT will also attend.

So I am putting out the call to any Baur owner, any model: 2002, E21, E30, E36, E46. Please come to Manchester CT this Sunday if you can make it. All are welcome! And we may be able to parlay this into some great publicity for ALL Baurs, and perhaps for the E21 Baurs in particular!


Even the presence of TWO Baurs would equal the largest E21 Baur convocation in the US this year! There were two at Bimmerfest in California, NO E21 Baurs at the Vintage, and my car is the only E21 Baur officially registered for Bimmerfest East (as far as I know).

I know a couple of E30 Baurs have been spotted in the CT area, and several more around New England. We also know that Lawrence Charlemagne (just over the NY border), L8apex914 (Baur #1475 Long Island), and the mystery Baur in Merrick, Long Island are all potentially in striking distance.

The weather is predicted to be great, so Baur owner or not, come on out to a great show this weekend!

The E21 Peters Convertible

There were several companies doing convertible conversions to the E21, in addition to Baur.  Fa Peters of Paderborn, Germany, according Jeroen's website, apparently made about 40 examples.

Nice...... but....

I found this comment from 2005.... I am not sure because the translation is so poor, but I think he is having a problem changing the center muffler, due to the apparatus that Peters installed to stiffen the frame.  Maybe that is why they didn't produce more.

Hello, I have an E21 315 Convertible Year 1983.Ich Peters tried today to expand pre-silencer, without success! Was blocked by the "stiffening frame" the Peters under the floor pan, the thing goes neither forward nor backward raus.Die tank connected to the fender, we have also removed, but no Chance.Nach consultation with an acquaintance of with for over five years, Peters I had to learn the convertibles works he has verzweifelt.Er to the same problem and now even been expanded transmission drive shaft and still found no way to the center muffler abzubauen.Den on a piece of old could be so "by flexen" but how to get the new new items ?? times I have changed 2 years ago with a 320 / 6 Peters and medium saucepan, there was the all too easy! For a few tips I would really appreciate. Greetings to all friends E21"

While perusing obscure corners of the internet for info on the Peters convertible,  guess whose name I came across.... in a post from 2003!!   The ubiquitous Jeroen!!!  The guy is EVERYWHERE!!  :)   Gotta love it!  Incredible.

UPDATE: Going Global!!!

(This is a partial repost, to show how far Baurspotting has reached since we started in February, 2011. 74 countries, plus the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico! Antarctica is the only continent that has not reported any Baurs. YET! But we will keep trying!)

So far I have only figured out how to make a very primitive map, using push pins for locations, and attaching a brief description of each car.  I haven't figured out a way to add pics, and I am not sure that it is possible. Suggestions are welcome. 

However.... there is that wonderful International Baur Registry site, and they HAVE figured out how to post pics!!  So if you have a car that you would like to be included on the Baur map, send your info to me at my email.  If you'd like to get your car's pic posted.... send your info to the International Baur Registry, if you have not done so already.  Please note the picture format that is required for each car in the Registry:  include a pic of the Baur number plate on the left front quarter panel. 

If all of that is too much trouble, you can just send all the above information to me, and I will take care of posting both on the map, and forwarding the pics etc., to the Registry.  (I hope I don't regret making that offer.)   :)

I love having visual aids, such as Google maps;  they help give us a valuable perspective as to our relative proximity to each other, which can be very helpful, for example, when we get around to considering the possibility of some kind of get-together, or a mass showing of Baurs at some regional event.  Perhaps at Bimmerfest East, August 6, 2011 Aberdeen, MD!! I will be there! I am hoping some other Baur owners will join us, as well as other E21 owners. We have 6 registered as of today. The more the merrier!

When, and if, that does occur, I have a suggestion for promoting the Baurs as a group:  all the Baurs park together, and post an identifying sign:   WELCOME TO THE BAURY!

Score one for the Good Guys! Ok, so I am open to criticism for being the eternal adolescent. I accept that. But I had some fun today on the way to work.

7:10 I am driving along my usual commute to work.... I spy a BMW 2002 ahead of me in light traffic. A roundie, so about 1973 or earlier. Hennarot. Very nice looking car, antique plates, great exhaust note. I actually HEARD him before I saw him.
So I make a few moves thru the traffic, and after a mile or so through the city we are now abreast at a red traffic light. 1/4 mile til the next light and then a single lane entrance to Interstate 95 on the right, other lanes to other destinations to the left. The light we are at is directly in front of the New London City Police Headquarters. Just to make it interesting.
I dust him at the green, but I am not sure he is engaged, given that we are right in front of the police bldg. Abreast again at the next light, I am thinking he wants 'other destinations' since he didn't pull in behind me for the I-95 entrance lane.
Wrong.
At the light change.... it is on. Off to the races and again I am first into the right entrance ramp, with him right on my bumper. Such fun! As we hit the I-95 lanes he slides over three lanes and I can hear him open it up. We are definitely on now! Out of the corner of my eye I can see him pulling up to me ..... until I hit it. We are uphill on the Thames River bridge--- steep uphill for about 1/2-3/4 mile then crest and downhill. I was pulling away about 3 car lengths as we crested the top at about 90mph ..... he just couldn't hang.... and I let off on the gas to prepare for my exit at the foot of the bridge...... and he zoomed by, probably pushing close to 100 mph on the downhill. I am sure he is scratching his head thinking.... wtf happened here....
My 323i Baur has no badging on the rear... he probably thought he was up against a regular 320i 4 banger, and that he would teach me a lesson on the open highway. The only clue .... is the twin pipes for the exhaust that tell you it is a 6 cylinder not a 4. Very stealth. I am sure I shocked the hell out of him.
Oh well, FWIW..... it was a lot of fun for the minute or so it lasted. I had a smile on my face most of the day. God, I love that car! It was 47 degrees, btw, and I was driving with full top down!* Wearing shorts!* It doesn't get any better than that!*

There is a lot of information on here, some of which may need to be updated.  Unfortunately, I am unable to post pics on it yet, but many pics of the Baurs can be found throughout the bimmerforums thread:  'Baur TC 1s in the US", especially Jeroen's initial list on page 1, and some updates on page 3.  I am open to any suggestions on how to get pics on this map, or even another map site that will allow easy loading of pics.

According to this map, there may be 15 or 20 E21 Baurs in the Mid-Atlantic region. Is anyone available to help make a Baur showing at Bimmerfest! It is a Come-As-You-Are Party... Or at least, it is for me!
