SOTW: BMW 316 BAUR CONVERTIBLE

Summer sun fun in a 1980s BMW - just don't expect any frills. Really

Like any true Brit, Shed has a natural soft spot for the underdog, but this week's offering is about as underdoggy as cars get.

Allow us to explain. Although this may look to the uninitiated like the true 1980s icon that is the BMW 3-series convertible it is, in fact, one of the final versions of the coachbuilt Baur 'Top Convertible'. This was the open-topped predecessor to the first full-on factory convertible, and sold for a while in BMW dealerships alongside its rather more elegant successor.

Think of the Baur E30 as Fergie to the factory car's Princess Di, Betamax to the full convertible's VHS, Jive Bunny and Master Mixers vs Kraftwerk. This particular example has had it even tougher, with a proper 1980s poverty specification: cloth seats, plastic wheel trims, 89bhp carb-fed 1.8. When it comes to kit, you name it, this car hasn't got it.

For some reason, though, all this makes it immensely appealing. There's an honesty and a simplicity to this white cab that's missing from the soft-tops of the 21st century. The exposed rollover protection, sparse equipment, the utter absence of any performance ambitions; this car is simply about driving with the roof off - and nothing else matters.

It won't set your trousers on fire with its performance, and it probably won't impress the mobile phone-brandishing chaps in braces down at the local wine bar - it's almost the very antithesis of the glitzy yuppy-ism of its successor.

Still, if you fancy making the most of a spot of summer sun (and be quick, because Wimbledon's on so it's bound to rain soon), we can't think of a less pretentious way to enjoy it.

Our vendor has produced a rather enigmatic advert, so we can't exactly tell you a lot about the car, but it seems to have survived in decent condition during the course of its entirely reasonable 132k miles, and its (alleged) two lady owners have kept it regularly serviced.

It also looks to be fairly tidy, although a classified description of 'fair condition' is often a reason to set alarm bells ringing, and the peak of summer is hardly a sensible time to buy a convertible from a financial point of view. But £1k is a solid price, and if the car is as solid as it looks, it might just be a bit of a bargain.

You may recall the post below from last December 2013, and previously from June 2013, when Paul S. first spotted it in Issaquah, WA.

Thanks to Paul W. of Vancouver in 2002FAQ yesterday, we have another update to the previous update!  :)

Seeing this, I was immediately reminded of the Golf Yellow Targa posted by Paul, and so I posted a pic and asked if the sold Targa could possibly be this one.  

Could one of the guys pictured here be the owner/seller?  Pic is from Paul S June 2013.  Hey, it could even be the eventual BUYER!!??  We just don't know at this point.

I mean really, when you think about it.... how many Golf Yellow Baur Cabrio Targas can there BE in the Seattle area??!!!  :)   Sooooo, I had a feeling......

The Bad News is:  we still don't know who the owner is!!

UPDATE 12/7/2013:  While going through some old files..... look at what I found!

Here is the caption that I found on the pic:
"bmw_2002_targa_72  512 0f 1963 per 2002 Haus San Luis Obispo CA".  

Check the wheels, etc.  Looks like the same car.....  So, it would appear that the Cabrio Targa in Issaquah, WA was previously located  at 2002 Haus in San Luis Obispo, CA.  This pic is dated 10/4/2007, btw. 

Do we have any other info on this car yet?  :)

"I saw this 2002 cabriolet last weekend. New one to me! The owner said that there were only 1800 of them built and none imported to the US. He was driving it to a bike race with his bike on the Thule rack. It was a very nice looking car. It's a beauty, folks!  

I asked Ed for some details, and here is his response:

"A few weeks ago a customer was in the dealership and we got to to talking and he told me his dad had a Baur 02.  He sent me and a pic via email today.  ........  New Hampshire Baurs #44808 ( my old car ) my currant E30. Rodneys E21 Dave T's 2002 . The white 2002 ( dave ) My black TC2 five known cars in the state + this one makes six. "

Wait a second..... rechecking that math....   :)   .........

New Hampshire Baurs:   1)  #44808 ( Ed's old car now with new owner) ;   2) Ed's  current white E30;  3) Rodneys white  E21;  4)  Dave T's green 2002 Targa;  5) The white 2002 Targa (owned by Dave---- error:  that should be Pete M.);  6) Ed's black TC2.   That makes 6.... and this red Targa now makes 7 Baurs in New Hampshire!!! 

3 Baur Cabrio Targas;

...... and still counting!

"1973 bmw 2002 buar edition a very hard to find rare model , i bought this car about four years ago with a missing engine , i had a 2002 tii engine that we serviced and tuned at the time and installed it in the car along with lots of new parts such as water pump thermostat clutch set belts and more , we made the car run but according to my mechanic it needed a stronger fuel pump due to the fact we had a 2002 tii engine with mechanically injected pump , unfortunately i never got around it and car sat for four years ,i tried starting it yesterday but the battery is too weak and i think it may need a service , engine turns great but did not start ,
is missing the targa top ,has some surface rust in the trunk , it would make a great restoration project for some one who has the time"

Baur Spotted in San Pedro, CA!

thanks to reelizmpro in E30 Bimmerforums for posting this pic of a Baur he spotted in San Pedro, CA.  He said there is also another one in the area, so we hope to hear something about that soon also.

Does anyone know this Baur?

According to reelizmpro, it has body-colored windshield wipers!  Nice looking Baur!

Do we know this Baur already?  OK, Baurspotters:  can we get the Baur plate number from this Baur to add it to the International Baur Registry, if it isn't already listed?
