Long Lost Baur #4587: Found in California! Thank you, Artur and Scott!

The car immediately above has been previously identified as Baur #4587, and it has been listed on the International Baur Registry for at least several years.

The answer is:

YES!

That is not all, folks!

You see, Baurspotting has had a strong interest in finding this car since we first saw that ad back in 2010-2011.

Why such an interest?

Check out the list below. This is a list of 25 BMW E21 Baurs that were imported to North America. You will notice that they are all listed as 320i, which means they are all US Spec. Most are listed as having the destination of "Kanada", with 3 coming to the US. Five others do not give a specific North American destination, so we are not sure where in North America they eventually ended up.

In the chart above, you will see in the second column from the left near the bottom, a green highlighted number: 74587. That is the Baur number for a US SPEC BMW E21 320i Baur imported to North America.

This car is one of only 25 known BMW E21 Baurs imported by BMW into North America. The rest of the E21 Baurs that we have located are all "Grey Market' cars: cars that were not officially imported by BMW, but rather were brought into the US by private individuals.

Here is the VIN from the ebay ad: WBAAG3306D8386800

If you look at column 3 in Jeroen's chart,you will see that that number matches the VIN for Baur 74587. I ran that through the BMW VIN decoder, and that too checks out: a 320i US Spec E21.

1983 BMW 3-Series

1983 BMW E30 323i Baur convertible 5spd A/C OBC PS Cruise Targa top Zender

1983 TC Baur 323i.

Car was originally imported to Cincinnati Ohio in 1985 where it was federalized by a company called Bavarian Motors.

I purchased this car with a blown motor in 2007.   It had thrown a rod on the original 2.3L M20 L-Jetronic engine.

Rather than source a new block for the 2.3, I installed a used US version of the M20B25 2.5L Motronic engine, from a 1987 325iS.

Car has a limited slip differential and 5spd transmission with newer clutch.

Actual mileage is unknown as the odometer has stopped turning. I purchased the vehicle with just under 124,000 miles. The photo shown here of the speedometer with 139257 miles was taken in April of 2011 and when I transferred the title from my company's name to my own on 9/27/2012, the recorded mileage was 139,489, which is what it still reads. Since that date, the vehicle barely left my shop, where we were doing the work detailed below, for anything more than test drives.   2 nights prior to this listing, I drove the car 20 miles home and it still reads 139489.   I highly doubt it has 200 miles on it since the odometer failed.

Over the last year, I gutted the interior of this car and replaced the mostly missing dealer installed air conditioning system with a factory BMW system from a US car. At the same time, I added cruise control and a full On Board Computer. The car originally had no cruise and only a clock.

The seats are original early E30 sport seats.

For those who are unfamiliar with the TC Baur conversions, these cars were taken from the BMW production line and sent to the German coach builder TC Baur for conversion.
The cars were converted to a targa roof with drop down rear section, then finished by BMW and sold new as convertibles.   These cars were produced up until BMW released their own full convertible.

There is a rack in the trunk that holds the targa top, and the car comes with a parade boot that clips on to cover the rear roof section while it is folded down.
The stitching has failed on the rear window.   A patient person could probably re-stitch it. A less patient person could go to GAHH automotive top company and order a replacement rear canvas for $600.

Car has a period correct Zender body kit that consists of front and rear spoilers, rear valance and side skirts.

Overall the car is in good condition and drives well. A/C is ice cold, using R134a. Cruise works. Transmission is smooth, engine starts and runs perfectly.
No leaks, all suspension is tight, exhaust is solid.

There is a grapefruit sized dent above the left front wheel.   There is a small dent in the top of the left quarter glass trim, see pictures.

There are speakers installed, along with wiring to head unit, but there is no head unit in the car.
Car is fitted with headlight wipers, but they are inoperative.

Pictures depict a missing hubcap, but car does have all four hubcaps.    Wheels are period correct 15" with new tires.
Car is ready to drive as-is in good weather, or any weather after replacing the rear roof section detailed above.

This original full 1600-2 Baur Cabriolet was first registered in Vienna in 1968 and was until Dato Austria. The complete history of ownership is the first vehicle registration (individual license). End of the 80s the car was shut down. In the last 15 years of the 02 extensively revised (invoice documentation is available) was. In 2012, BMW was allowed again in Austria. The total mileage of 91,000 km is confirmed by the original service book.

New TC2 Baur in California!

BINGO! INSTANT UPDATE! 7:00pm 11/6/2013: SMALL BAUR WORLD STRIKES AGAIN!

We have previous pics of this Baur! The first two pics were taken May 18, 2013 at Bimmerfest in CA. Note the Euro plate, the wheels and the trunk lip!

This is the same car that we thought we 'discovered' tonight! as it turns out, we spotted in months ago, and now we see it again, but we still have no definite identification on it. Hopefully, EuroHB, who posted it in bimmerforums below, can help us out with that: We would like to know the details, such as the year of the car and, most importantly, the Baur plate number!

Here is another Baur we stumbled on tonight in bimmerforums "BMW Rides and Events". Posted by 'EuroHB" who states that the pics were shot in October of his uncle's Baur. It is anTC2 323i, but that is all we know for now.
