Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial, Part VII

Today I want to point out some little known facts about the early Baurs that I learned from Andreas, in his work restoring the First Baur.  The pictures below basically chronicle some of the changes made to the Baur during the course of its development.

The first thing I want to point out is the difference in the appearance of the roll bar in the early stages of development vs. the appearance in the final production version of the Baurs:

Look closely at the "B" pillar roll bar in this photo above.  You will notice that the design pattern is a vertical orientation.  On the Baur below (the same car, by the way), these lines are horizintally oriented.  This photo above was taken during the development stages.
Here is the same car a little later in the design process, and you can clearly see the design on the "B" pillar is horizontal.

A second interesting item that Andreas pointed out was that in the process of his restoration he found the following:

You can see the outline of the letters "H" and "C".  This is what he found when he removed the Baur Badge on the "B" pillar/ roll bar.  It is believed that this HC refers to "Hardtop Cabriolet".  you may recall that the Baur hardtop is a kind of 'targa' style roof.  However, Baur was unable to use the term "Targa" because Porsche owned the rights to the use of the term.  Instead, Baur chose the term TC for "Top Cabriolet". The imprint above seems to indicate that this "TC" was a shortened form of the original "Hardtop Cabriolet".
Here is the later, more familiar, badge on the E21 Baur.  Andreas found the HC underneath this badge.
Here you can see the "TC BAUR" badge on the "B" pillar of the later series E30 TC2 Baur.  This pic was taken by Amir K. at the SoCal Vintage Show in Van Nuys CA on October 29, 2011.
A third difference between the earliest and the later Baurs was in the operation of the hardtop.  Jeroen pointed out recently in E30 bimmerforums that the early tops could be partly raised and held in place, much like a tilt sunroof.
If you look closely at the photo in the center of this ad you will see that the hardtop roof is slightly upraised, allowing air flow through the cabin, similar to the tilt-top feature of a sunroof.  The later Baurs do not have this option, although the E30 TC2 Baurs do have this feature.

Incidentally, all the cars shown in the pictures above, with the exception of the Baur badge picture and the red TC2, are the same car, Baur #00001 at different stages of development.

Additionally, take a close look at the pictures above.  Although it is very hard to be sure, ..... it almost looks like the badge on the "B" pillar says "HC'.  You be the judge of that.        :)

The last item pointed out by Andreas is the hand stitched sun visor that he found in Baur #000001.  Now THAT is something you don't see very often!
Once again, I am grateful to Andreas for sharing the information above, and I am grateful for this opportunity to share it with all of you.

Coming Attractions:   Late last week I asked Andreas if he would consider sharing the story of how he came to find and restore the first Baur (#000001), and how he came to own the last Baur built ( #4595).   I suggested that he may be more comfortable telling the story in his native language, without worrying about translating it into English, and he could let me worry about getting it translated.  Andreas has graciously agreed, and over the weekend he sent me his story in German.

So, the next installment will be Andreas's story, in his own words.  If you do not speak German, fear not!  I don't speak German either.  However, I am very fortunate to have a very talented nephew who DOES speak German, and he has enthusiastically agreed to help me out here.  I am very grateful to him for his help.   More on that next time, so .... stay tuned!

The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial, Part VI

The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial, Part VI

First of all, a little clarification is in order.  The gentleman in the brown jacket on the left (above) and signing the hood below, is none other than Hermann Wenzelburger, the co-designer of the Baur!  So this truly does make the the #000001 Baur a 'signed original' indeed!  Wow.
Andreas also tells me that the gentleman on the right in the picture above is the man who made the made Baur roof, and he has the original roof in his basement!  What a great moment, so many years down the road!

"H. Wenzelburger"

Here is a photo of Mr. Wenzelburger that I had on file, given to me by Jeroen Janssen of The Netherlands.  It was taken at Stuttgart last year at the 100th Anniversary of Baur celebration.

Also, Andreas informs me that the woman in the red jacket in the center of the picture is the daughter of Mr. Baur.  She owns the first ever 2002 Baur built, and drives it daily in the summer.  Great stuff, Andreas!  Thank you!

The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial, Part V

The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial, Part V:  the First and Last Baur, and Andreas' Glas 1300GT.
Here again we see two of Andreas' Baurs:  #000001 on the right, and #4595 (the last TC1 Baur) on the left.
Here we again can see a pic of #4595 (third from the right) which is a 316A.  Below is a pic of the interior of #4595.
Another pic of the #4595.

The four pics above are from the listing of Baur #4595 on the International
Baur Registry.

The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial, Part IV

The Debut of the Restored Baur #000001

Welcome to Part IV of The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial!  We ended the last part with this pic, showing Baur #000001 mostly, but not completely, restored.

Although the restoration was not yet completed, Andreas (the owner) had the opportunity to take it to a car event in Stuttgart, as a kind of "Come As You Are" show.  These pictures are from that show, I believe, and you can see that the new roof has not yet been installed.
You can see the Baur in the Baur display area.
We have a very historic moment approaching.  Since I am not sure of the translation, here again are Andreas' words about the picture above:  on the last day is also the daughter of minheer Baur in our region to visit.

Andreas:  "Dat is een moment van die iedere Autoliefhebber droomt De Linkse minheer is de Konstrukteur van deze Baur en de rechte de Garnierder van toen die mij nog een originele dak als muster kont bezorgen."

Again, I am not sure of the translation, but I believe Andreas thought this was a very special moment, in that those two men worked on this car at Baur when it was being built, and they were quite affected to see it restored to such beauty.  Perhaps someone can help with an accurate translation.... "Google translate" leaves much to be desired.

We now continue with these pictures of the new roof and rear window.
Here is the installation of the roof. These are the words of Andreas himself, commenting in another forum on the new roof:   "Here the roof and now it's there for the spezial hand made because it is different from the Series Baur I think that's the most expensive item was the Restoration. Here is a photo of the roof Specialist who made it. "
Beautiful!

In 2008, the now completed Baur #000001 returns to Stuttgart.

And he is accompanied by another very special Baur that Andreas also owns:  #4595, the very last Baur built!  The first Baur and the last Baur together!
The car on the left is #4595 (notice the trunk lip), the car on the right is #000001.

Andreas: "Here is the Konstrukteur and still stop by "
He autographs Baur #000001!!!
Wow.  A signed original!!!  What a wonderful and historic moment!  Congratulations Andreas!!!

Do NOT wash that car!!  :)

Andreas also brought the car to the "Techno Classica" show in Essen a short time later.

Notice the signature of the Konstrukteur is still on the hood!

This brings us to the end of Part IV.  But we are not done yet!  I am pleased to announce that I have made email contact with Andreas himself, and he has very graciously sent me some more pics of both of these historic Baurs.  Those pics include some very interesting, and surprising, information about the early Baurs that I was unaware of.  I look forward to sharing that info in our next installment, along with some pics of some of Andreas' other cars.

Stay tuned!!

The First Baur: A Restoration Project Pictorial, Part III

Welcome to Part III!

We are finally going to see the extent to which Andreas went to restore this very special Baur #000001.  You will recall in Part II we saw the sad condition the car was in when he purchased it.  Recognizing that this is indeed an historic vehicle, it appears that Andreas took his restoration work very seriously.

Stunning work.  The pictures speak for themselves.  You can also see the volume of new parts that will be installed as part of the restoration process.

Coming Attractions:  Part IV, The Debut of the First Baur
Here is a pic of the Baur's appearance shortly before the restoration process was completed.  You can see the rear window still needs to be replaced, and the fuel filler door is not installed.  I think you will agree that it is coming along nicely, however!

Still to come:  The Debut of the restored Baur #000001; the reunion of Baur #000001 with one of the Baur employees who helped build it; the Reunion of Baur #000001 with the Final TC1 Baur #004595;  and the man who now owns both Baurs, and was responsible for this beautiful restoration.

Stay Tuned!
