UPDATE 9:30am October 2, 2016: CRISIS AVERTED!
I received the following message from Antoine this morning:
"Hi Tom, just to inform that i've recover Bertille this morning.
The fact is that the policeman who arrested me was just an a**hole, and tried to scare me. It will not be destroyed (for the moment). Paid for pound fees, and something relative to pollution."
French (law) specifies this on page 76.

I also received a number of messages of support and offers to help from Gregory Bradbury* and others, which I appreciate very much. "Gregory Bradbury I had researched this, for vintage cars. They are allowed, it is covered in a French weekly magazine - La Vie de l'Auto. Most countries in Europe consider "collector" from 30 years old (or more) and many require a specific "collector or Oldtimer or Veteran" note in the vehicle's registration to benefit from specific exemptions.

He can also seek help from the FFVE. Have him PM me."

Here is a link (from Anthony Tony Shah) which gives some explanatory information about the Parisian emissions restrictions that are relevant to this incident. Thank you Anthony! http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/paris-older-car-ban-classic-cars-now-exempt
ORIGINAL POST:
Our friend, Antoine Gbl, has had his BMW Baur Cabrio Targa apparently impounded in Paris, France. France apparently has special rules regarding cars built before 1997. It appears that his car will be destroyed. Does he have any way to fight this? Please help!
This is basically all I know at this point. Any insight or thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated! Time is of the essence, btw! Can they just destroy this piece of history because of its age and a little rust? Sacre bleu!

Please send me some more details, if what you're looking for here is for someone to acquire the car and bring it to the United States I might be interested. We have another identical year Baur that needs to be restored as well Mario Langsten. VSR1.com
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mario. I am chatting with the owner in france as we speak. It is not clear if we can get the car out of impoundment. I frankly can't believe they did this to him... He is now a pedestrian! I am trying to get as much info as i can. Stay tuned.
