This is one of the 8 Baurs that we found for sale on Gumtree Australia this morning, but we thought that it merits its own post.
There 10,865 E30 TC2 Baurs built at Stuttgart. what a lot of folks may not know is that there were an additional 3,000 TC2 Baurs built in South Africa, under license to Baur. They are slightly different from those built in Stuttgart: all are RHD, no Baur number plate, the Baur top frame is painted body color (Stuttgart examples are painted black), and a different level of trim, among other things.
The car featured below is a good example of the South African-built Baurs:
Rare BMW 323i Cabriolet in 'Lapis Blau' silver/green paintwork and navy blue leather interior. Not a 'Baur' Cabrio but a rarer South African-built car with all the luxury trim and features missing from the German cars.
Still in concourse condition, the car regularly wins its class at WA club show'n'shines. It runs 15" German Remotec mags with Jamex springs and Bilstein Sports Dampers for great handling. The engine has been chipped for greater power and economy and runs a sports exhaust.
The car has been in our family for over twenty years and has been meticulously maintained and serviced by specialist BMW tuners throughout. We are only selling because we are downsizing and don't need two vehicles any more.
Additional features include a Cyclops central locking and alarm system and a Pioneer CD sound system.
Note the color of the Baur top frame: it matches the body color, unlike the Baurs built in Stuttgart. As I understand it, the reason for this is the following: in Germany, the bodies were already painted before the Baur top was installed by Baur; In South Africa, the Baur roof was installed, and then the entire car was painted. :)
This is a very cool car, although I think the seller is mistaken on the color. "Lapisblau' is a very dark blue; my Baur (at the top of this page) is Lapisblau. I think this one may be "Lachsilber', or something similar, although I am not sure of the spelling.
