1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

The BMW 700 is a small rear-engined car which was produced by BMW in various models from August 1959 to November 1965. The coupe and saloon versions of the 700 were shown at the 1959 Frankfurt Motor Show. After the show, BMW received 25,000 orders for 700s. Production of the BMW 700 Coupe began in August 1959, with the saloon version following in December. The first variant of the 700 to appear after the original coupe and saloon was the 700 Sport in August 1960. Available only as a coupe, the Sport used an uprated engine with a pair of Solex carburetors and a 9.0:1 compression ratio. This brought the power output to 40 horsepower (30 kW). The Sport also had a rear anti-roll bar. A ribbed oil pan was used to reduce the oil temperature of the more powerful engine. The 700 Sport was renamed the 700 CS in 1963.

The 700S Cabriolet was introduced shortly after the 700 Sport, and was available only with the Sport's 40 horsepower engine. The convertible body was made by Karosserie Baur of Stuttgart, 2,592 convertibles were built. It was the first BMW automobile with a monocoque structure. The 700 was a sales success at a time when BMW was close to financial ruin. The 700 was also successful in its class in motorsport, both in its stock form and as the basis of a racing special called the 700RS.

This Baur cabriolet was formerly in the showroom of a German dealership, when purchased by the owner. It has had professional work carried out to the double skinned floor which are prone to rust, and today can be described in being good original condition, with everything working apart from the clock. The original interior is especially appealing in two tone cream and red. It has the high compression twin carburettor two cylinder engine which propels the car to a 84 mph driven through a four speed transmission.

A very good original example of a rare variant of BMW cabriolet. The body work is good, the floors have been professionally replaced retaining the double skin design by Baur. The interior is original, the hood and tonneau are in good condition, the original mats are in place, an area of carpet needs replacing. The engine again is good condition, being engineer owner maintained. In addition recent work has been carried out to upgrade the drive shafts to CV's from the original BMW rubber doughnuts.

Many 02 enthusiasts will have possible noticed I have relisted my Cabriolet  for sale, I can reassure you my example is in extremely good solid rust free condition after benefitting a completed body off restoration some years ago at the same time have a professional engine rebuild undertaken by Walden Engineering in Cambridge incorporating a polished head and enlarged inlet valve with twin 40 Weber’s.
only covering 9300miles since 1995. It’s extremely solid and rust free i can forward many more images to all interested parties showing all bodywork and other areas. The Cabriolet comes with a large restoration and history file.

The Cabriolet is currently in winter storage and available for any mechanical and bodywork inspection.

I have hardly had time to enjoy the Cabriolet for years due to work commitments only covering a few hundred miles each summer, it’s regularly serviced each year.

The full description of the Sale is listed below.

—————————
I am selling my rare BMW 1600 Cabriolet after 23 years of ownership, its the last of my collection of classic 02’s, having owned previously the official BMW UK 1974 2002 Turbo press and test car also an Original 74 ALPINAa4S (now in the USA) along with a 67 BMW 1600 Coupe and Tii Lux.
The Paint is the original colour of Chamonix White with black calf leather upholstery and black hood, never driven in the wet and is in excellent condition. Completely restored in 1995 (there is a large photographic record in the history file)  having benefited from a new fabric roof, carpets, and re trimmed black leather original seats. I had a complete body off restoration to the chassis rails with new BMW panels also with a complete engine rebuild with mild upgrades undertaken by Walden Engineering who were based in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire. Walden was made up of staff from the famous Blynstein Engineering in Shepreth. The original M10 engine has the modification of twin Weber 40 DCOE carbs, and Schrick camshaft however, it's completely original in all other respects inc matching numbers, including the standard four-speed transmission, it has only covered 15,500km (9,600 miles) since the restoration back in 1995.  Its very quick with 120hp output and drives superbly.
Moted till OCT 2019.
The documents in the history file shows it was delivered new to BMW in Paris and the previous seller in the USA mentioned it was ordered for Pierre Cardin the French Fashion designer although, hard evidence has been difficult to confirm these statements and needs to be explored further.  It was bought by a lady in Los Angeles in 1983, which is where it resided until 1994 when a collector brought it to the UK along with a few other Classics and advertised it for sale in England, to where i purchased it  immediately.
This vehicle has won numerous BMW 2002 club awards over the years and wherever she goes it seems to draw a crowd and believed to be the only UK road registered example.
I am a longtime 02 enthusiast and not a trader and if i have missed off any information, plenty more images can be provided including the restoration.
These Cabriolets rarely come up for sale and please do ask me any questions.
This example is believed to be the ONLY road U.K. registered example.
If you would like to arrange an independent inspection please message me, the vehicle is in winter storage near Stratford upon Avon. Only 30 minutes drive from Birmingham international airport. call/sms (44) 7715590199.
THIS SALE IS AVAILABLE TO INTERNATIONAL BUYERS AND NOT JUST UK?
I am happy to provide some names of classic car export companies who export Classics overseas.
Many thanks

Winning buyer please comply with payment instructions and collection.
Thank you.

This Is NOT a Baur! But It IS An Abomination!

This one has been posted around the Internet from time to time.  I may have even done a post years ago.  I stumbled on it again today when going through some old files.  So I repost it as a cautionary tale:  this car entered this world as an E21 320i coupe.  "Look what they've done to my car!"

It was in Florida at one time, and then I heard it was in Michigan or Minnesota.  Haven't heard anything for a couple of years now.  Not that I am complaining.

My bias is that I prefer original cars, so I have a hard time with this one.  But I do understand the desire to make the car your own, and I respect the right of every owner to do so.  I admire the skills and craftsmanship--- not to mention the passion---  that it takes to do that.

But this one.... is beyond the pale, to be kind.  What was he thinking?  ;)

Please don't answer that question, I don't want to know!  ;)

Once Beautiful TC1 Baur Spotted "Rusting in Peace" in South Africa!

Thanks to our friend and fellow Baur owner Ashley Naidoo in South Africa for sending us this interesting find:  TC1 Baurs are much less common in South Africa than the TC2 Baurs, partly because BMW actually built about 3,000 TC2 Baur IN South Africa!  No TC1 Baurs were ever built there to my knowledge.  So finding a TC1 in SA is always exciting!

This one is a very sad example, as you can see.  But, when I checked the Baur number with the Baur Registries, it is already listed in both Registries ..... but looking decidedly different in the Registry pics! We assume, at least for now, that it is indeed the same car, and I am working with Ashley to try to pin down more details for confirmation.  I am also reaching out to our Baur Guru, Jeroen Janssen, to further confirm, with the specialized production information that he has access to, that this is the same Baur shown in the Registry pics!
 Registry pic.

Baur A000643-06 this is one of Ashley's pics.

Another Registry pic.

So stay tuned for more info, as we try to unfold this little mystery!  Are all of these pics ... the same Baur?  If so, there is a sad story lurking behind these pics which show such an awful deterioration.  What happened to it?  Or has there been some sort of a mixup in the Baur numbers.... I do not see a photo of the Baur plate in the Registry pictures.... and the rusted car in the field does't seem to show any silver paint under the hood in the pic of the Baur plate!  Was it repainted?  Or are we dealing with two different Baurs?

Stay tuned!  ;)

Euro Baur Cabrio Project: $2K 1985 BMW 320i

Euro Baur Cabrio Project: $2K 1985 BMW 320i

Thanks to our friend John Dickey via our friend and fellow Baur owner David Tothill for sending along the link to this Bring a Trailer project sale!

Baur #3387 is not yet listed in the International Baur Registry*, so it qualifies as a NEW FIND!  Congratulations to the owner, Mike!

This 1985 BMW 320i Baur Top Cabrio or TC (VIN WBAAA310209531341) is a non-running project offered on a clean Florida title according to the seller. The car has been sitting for about two years, and the seller believes that its never-sold-in-the-US M20B20 six last ran at least that long ago. A rust “situation” is also mentioned, with corrosion visible on rear fenders and other places. Overall condition is rough, but the car does appear mostly complete with lots of cool Euro spec parts in view, and Baurs are always interesting to see on US roads. Find it here on Craigslist Bradenton, Florida for $2k.
Euro Baur Cabrio Project: $2K 1985 BMW 320i
Faded paint looks like it may have originally been Cosmos Blue, but horizontal portions of the finish look more like primer now. The body appears straight from we can see, but there’s some worrisome rust visible on the rear fenders and perhaps a bit more on the rearmost portions of the rockers. Wheels are ubiquitous bottle caps, and European equipment like the headlights and front clip add interest. Finish on the bumpers looks OK, but the rear is becoming detached and the front shows evidence of an impact that DOT-spec diving boards would have likely shrugged off. Tacked-on side markers indicate that the car was federalized at some point, possibly as late as the early 1990’s.
Euro Baur Cabrio Project: $2K 1985 BMW 320i
Although definitely a bit quirky, we’ve always appreciated Baur’s take on these cars, as the convertible top design seems to do an effective job of retaining the Hoffmeister Kink and general greenhouse shape. The cloth top seems to have survived decently well here, but the zip-out back window has become partially separated and appears to show evidence of cloudiness and yellowing. Fitment still looks fair however, and just one worn-through hole is highlighted in a photo.
Euro Baur Cabrio Project: $2K 1985 BMW 320i
Factory gray vinyl upholstery isn’t common in US spec ars, and even with seams split wide open it’s still a cool sight here. Other issues include a heavily cracked dash, worn carpeting and a missing stereo head unit faceplate. Cheap looking aftermarket speakers are also in view, but some positives include a neat basic digital-clock where American market cars most often have an OBC, along with a cassette holder next to the E-brake lever. The steering wheel is a factory offered three-spoke sport design that’s not to be confused with an M-Tech I, and the shifter looks like it could be original. Photos of the trunk show the jack and battery cover in place.
Euro Baur Cabrio Project: $2K 1985 BMW 320i
Opening the hood reveals an M20 that’s not in running condition. It sounds like a few starting attempts have been made, but no further details are offered. These two-liter 12-valve sixes made 127 HP and 128 lb. ft. of torque for 1985, sent to the rear in this example via a preferable 5-speed manual transmission.
Euro Baur Cabrio Project: $2K 1985 BMW 320i
Peaking at the underside of this one ma reveal a deal-breaking amount of corrosion, but these are rare cars that don’t come up for sale in the US too often, and at the price anyway, this one looks like it might be worth a closer look. At the very least, it’s got some great parts that could benefit the rest of the E30 community.

I have not had the car long, haven't gotten it to start yet. Been sitting and ran at least 2 years ago as I've been told.
Top looks in good working order, rear window needs replaced. Car was in New York for a time and has a rust situation. Isn't terrible but isn't small.

Kind of a rare bird.
