The BMW models that Alpina has dealt with are a real holy grail for fans of the Bavarian brand. Paweł, the owner of the presented car, fulfilled his dreams, becoming the owner of a unique car on an international scale.
However, he did not decide to buy a new Alpina. That would be too easy. He decided to rebuild the beautiful classic according to his vision and, most importantly, according to the original. To say that Paul is a real BMW fan is like saying nothing. In his garage there were several copies of the E21 model, and two of them you could admire in older BMW TRENDS numbers. Paweł did not even intend to hide the fascination of the first historical three, but Baur TC1 has always been his eye. Dreams were fulfilled at the end of 2013.
On the internet auction appeared an interesting pre-race BMW E21 Baur from January 1979 (copy No. 698 with 4,595 all produced). The graphite colored car was quite complete, it had a completely new roof, manual transmission, Alpina front spoiler, threshold covers as well as very rich documentation. His biggest downside was undoubtedly the engine that did not run. In addition, the clutch and front calipers were missing, whereas the graphite lacquer was not original (original Polaris Silver). Despite everything, Paweł decided to buy the issued copy and start its renovation.
After many attempts, the engine was able to start. The new owner of the three decided to completely renovate it so that he could serve him for a long time. In the first place, the shark was completely demolished, and the individual parts were sorted and put in special crates. The first tinsmithing stage has begun. Due to the terrible condition, the front belt, front fenders, sills and the floor were replaced. During disassembly the windshield broke, only confirming the need to replace it. At that time, the works were suspended for about a year and a half. What was the reason? Paweł decided to take care of other projects. The topic of Baura returned in 2015, and the car went to an external company to complete the work. The second tinsmithing stage has begun. The body was cleaned and the old varnish removed and the new original Polaris Silver was laid. The underbody was also secured and the roof frame was painted black. The suspension was also blasted and the used components replaced. New wheels were also established. The 13-inch original Alpina rims (5.5-inch front, 6-inch rear) were refreshed, new tires 185/70 / R13 were stretched and rims were crowned with special caps.
Subsequently, the mechanical side of the car was addressed. The brakes were renovated. The calipers, brake pads and brake hoses were replaced with new ones. New shock absorbers, springs and rocker arms have also been installed. The engine has been renovated using original parts with new bushings and rings. The head was refurbished and the exhaust manifold from acid to M20 was mounted. The complement was a completely new exhaust with chrome tips. After such operations, the engine was able to be started without any major problems. In addition, two fuel tanks, fuel lines, a fuel pump and a battery were replaced.
When the mechanics were ready, Paweł began to refresh the interior. The car went to the upholsterer, where the roof and new upholstery were installed, which covered the damping mats. The uniqueness of the project began to be emphasized by the steering wheel, clocks and shift knob, signed with the Alpina logo. As it turned out later, it was only a temporary configuration.
The body was also adapted to the original Alpina. The silver Baura is equipped with two-colored stripes contrasting with the color of the body and a new rear spoiler. There are also new headlamps and rear lamps, bumpers and all necessary emblems. New mirrors have been installed, all plastic parts of the body have been refreshed, and in the cabin there is a period radio with speakers.
The purpose of car engine tuning was taken to a specialist in Warsaw and so modified appeared at the 5th National Shark Rally in Kazimierz Dolny. An interesting fact is that Baur was only finished the day before the gold, and when he defeated several hundred kilometers without a problem, he was given the title of the most beautiful car of the rally. Paweł, however, did not intend to rest on his laurels.
Inside, there was upholstery in line with the original Alpina C1 model, and a new leather cover was made on the roof. A great move that gave a thunderous effect was the assembly of Recaro armchairs and the rear seat with colorful motifs referring to Alpina's outer decals. The whole interior has been finished in black with a new carpet, door panels, headlining and a rear shelf at the forefront.
At the moment the project is finished and the car and the owner are overcoming kilometers. 170-horsepower engine with 210 Nm of torque can give a lot of fun. The first 100 km / h appears on the speedometer after about 7.5 seconds. This is estimated data, because the car has only to pass accurate measurements on the dynamometer. Paweł, however, claims that the catalog speed of 209 km / h accelerates without any problems. But above 120 km / h with the roof removed in the cabin, it blows strongly. Clear lack of a windsock that was not offered in this model. Average combustion, depending on the driving style, fluctuates between 13.5-15 liters per 100, which should not surprise anyone. Interestingly, the car is currently equipped with a 4-speed short gearbox, which took the place of the original 5-speed transmission.
At the end of the meeting, Paweł gave me a lot of interesting facts about E21 in the Baur body. The model was sold in the official BMW dealer network. Baur body is considered stiffer than the usual version, which is quite surprising, and the rear seat is a lot shorter than in the coupé version. In addition, E21 with an open body has a rear windscreen (plexiglass) from a small electric blower located behind the rear seat backrest. The type of roof tends to be fixed in the boot after dismantling, and the folded rear part of the roof is covered with a waterproof cover.
About the described car can be discussed for hours, and the real fans of sharks, which are undoubtedly Paweł, are mines of knowledge about these desirable and unique German classics. E21 in the Baur version is a fast and comfortable car, which despite 38 years of running like a modern car.
