1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

BMW Baur 320i E21 Part Out (Sun Valley) Los Angeles CA

Spotted on craigs list Sun Valley, Los Angeles, CA.  I am trying to reach the seller as we speak!  If this is indeed a 320i, it could be:   Baur is A****64 and the last 7 VIN # are *****37.  If so, then this could be a Baur that we have been looking for for a long time!

Here's hoping!

JK's Inka Cabrio Targa in the UK

UPDATE:  Dan Hawke reminds us in Facebook today that "JK" refers to Jay Kay, the lead singer of Jamiroquai!  We actually should have known that since we did a post in May 2014 on Jay Kay and his cars, including this very same Cabrio Targa*!    :)  I guess I am just not hip enough to be on first name basis with "JK"!     Thank you, Dan!  :)

Thanks to Richard Stern for posting this beauty today in Facebook1   But that is all we know about it so far!  We have no idea who JK may be, but we love this Baur!

Thank you, Richard!

Great Classic & Sports Car (UK) Baur Article From the 1990s

I found this article today linked in an old thread in r3vlimited from 2006.  The info below was on the old Tricord E21 page*.  The articles are undated," but they mention "11 years after" the end of the E30 cabrios..... so that would put it at about 1993 or 1994.
The articles contain some interesting info, including references to the possible pending safety legislation in the US, that could result in a ban on 'open cars".  It cites this issue as part of the reason that BMW stopped producing the Voll Cabrios (also Baurs) after building only 200.  Production began instead on the Cabrio Targa, with a built in roll bar! An interesting tidbit: the Baur Cabrio Targa cost as much at the time as the Jaguar E-Type!  :)

Anyway, enjoy the articles, which I believe I have posted years ago, btw.   If you find the articles hard to read because of the print size, click on the links to go to the original article, which you can then magnify.  I was unable to post these any larger without overrunning the sidebar and losing some of the image definition.  But they are definitely worth reading for any Baur fan!  Trust me on that!  ;)

Classic Cars Baur article
The UK-based car magazine "Classic Car" has published an article about Baur productions over three BMW models (2002, E21 and E30). Including pictures of each model, tech details and more. Ironically, they got the production numbers totally wrong. Their number (137,137) refers to the total amount of E21 323i built by BMW, and even then it's still wrong because the exact numbers of 323i built by BMW is 137,107. Also, the power output is 143HP and not 139HP. So far for my nitpicking...
Still, it's definately worth to read though.

The BMW 2002 series is important in the history of BMW for several reasons; not the least of which being that it brought the company out of near bankruptcy in the 1960s and put BMW on the map. It was the ancestral grandfather to the BMW 3 Series and was produced from 1968 to 1976. German BMW importer Max Hoffman is credited with the car's creation. He had suggested to BMW's engineering director that a 2.0 litre engine should be installed into the small two-door 1602 to improve performance and emissions. The engineering director argued that the larger motor would not fit, but Hoffman countered that it certainly would fit; if he refused to put the motor in, Hoffman would personally take a car with the new engine to Georg Meier, a famous motorcycle racer, for installation. Almost immediately this brought action - and the resulting 2002 (named after the new motor's displacement).

BODYWORK AND MECHANICS WILL NEED ATTENTION TO COMPLETE AND RESTORE ALTHOUGH ALL THE PARTS REMAINING SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE RECONDITIONED FAIRLY EASILY

NO MOT (SHOULD BE OBVIOUS BUT THOUGHT I WOULD STATE ANYWAY)
