NEW: Baur Restoration Projects

New Page!  I will add more as I receive it.

2/24/2014  Wow I haven't added anything here in a while!  But here is a great one from BillinMN:  his Baur restoration back around 2007.  I just found these pics today!
Don't ask me how I found this!  I don't know how I found it!  I was stumbling around in old Baur threads, and BOOM!  This pops up!  I am a firm believer in the old aphorism that says:  the harder you work the luckier you get!  Well, I got lucky tonight.  :)

OK, these pics are from BillinMN, a Baur owner and friend in MN.  I have corresponded with Bill on a couple of occasions, but I had no idea this pictorial was out there, waiting to be found!  Up until now, the full extent of my knowledge of Bill's Baur was this pic, which I have had on file for years.  It is his signature pic in bimmerforums, if I am not mistaken.

I offer this pictorial as an inspiration:
1)  to folks embarking on a restoration, so they get an idea of what they are getting themselves in to;
2) to folks struggling with a project so that they can see what their hard work can become!

Thank you, Bill for sharing this project with us!

Here is Bill's post in that long forgotten thread (June 2007), with the link to these pics:http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-37043.html

Hey Guys. I'm new here but do recognize a few names from other venues.

I've an '81 323 Baur almost done with a frame up. While not done yet, here's a glimpse of what an e21 Baur looks like.

Mayan, when are we going to see yours?????

Nice!!!!!!!

It is a beauty, isn't it?  :)  Well, surprisingly enough, it didn't always look this way!  :)

This is how it started out a while back.

Lots more pics.... I can't post them all here!  Go to this link to see the whole project:

5/26/2012  BAUR RESTORATION PROJECT FOR SALE IN PENNSYLVANIA!

Michael and Scott's project Baur in Newville, PA.  Scott is msbehmane36 in bimmerforums. This is Baur number 3583, and formerly looked like this:

When they bought it, it was a mess:  dents and dings everywhere, body kit in terrible shape,fLoor pan rust, etc.  So they decided to strip it down, and basically start over.  Lots of work remains to be done, as you can see, but they are well into the project.  We look forward to watching their progress on this restoration.

See the little cutouts in the valance above?  Michael plans to run his dual exhausts through there.

the project Baur  is on the left; the Baur on the right is Baurspotting's 1982 323i Baur #4154.  My son, Brian, and I stopped by to visit Scott and Mike on our way home from Bimmerfest East in August 2011.

Baurspotting has some more info on this car's previous history which we haven't published yet.  The pics below are from several different owners over a period of several years that we have found on the web.   Here it is:

Newville, PA  1982  Owner:  msbehmane36  previous owners traced to West Chester PA, Edison NJ undergoing restoration

Lots of other pics here.

Those pics must be from a previous owner. If those pics are from 2006 the car really went downhill in the past couple years before i picked it up. I bought it in Hanover PA last April. I dont know how he got it, Id be interested to know how and when it got from NJ to PA. In those pics you can see a red sticker where PA's inspection sticker usually is. It is a NJ rejected inspection sticker which is still on it, so it wasnt roadworthy then. And i dont know about "the little garage" sticker on it, I know that they are from NY state, maybe they have records of my car from when it may have been worked on there! ---msbehmane36

I found this today in an old email... from about two years ago (January 2009). I had forgotten all about it.---Tom

"Mike/Scott, I am pretty sure this is your car:

"1982 320i henna red, 5 speed, M10, needs a lot of love $900 clean PA title
1982 323 TC Baur 5 speed M-tecnic, IE springs Super sprint, Recaro, Zender, Euro bumpers, Clean title also and low miles $2500.
Both cars need work, I will take offers as a pair also."

It was in West Chester, PA at the time. Owner's name was Dan, and I still have his number, to verify if need be.
Let me know what you think... otherwise it is a new find--- I am 99% sure it is yours, though. '"

"It used to be opel grun and then it was painted maroon twice, in Germany i would guess by the attention to detail. Then that teal was applied in Jersey id guess again because of the lack of attention to detail. Out of all those colors i dont want it any of them, im still undecided on what its gonna be next." Present owner msbehmane36.

Mike B brings home his new Baur to Pennsylvania.

UPDATE 5/26/2012:  Scott B. has contacted me and stated that circumstances have changed, and they have decided to sell this Baur project as is.  Car is complete except for the front seats and the tranny.  Engine is the M20 323i.  If you are interested in this project, shoot me an email, and I will put you directly in touch with Scott.

Good luck, Shane!  Keep us posted and updated.

5/11/2012 sefb22 posted this today in E21 bimmerforums.  we look forward to seeing this one back on the road.  Nice work, Seth!

well- since picking it up a couple of years ago, ive pretty much torn the car apart...

started here:

in photos, it looked great, but when i tore into the car, i found all sorts of stuff that needed attention, as with any old car. i dont fault the seller... im pretty sure he wasnt aware of the many issues.

we ended up reworking the entire body, top to bottom, and respraying the car in satin black. in all, there are close to 200 hours of work in the body.

i replaced the bbs airdam with the correct one for the car, sourced some NOS euro bumpers, and found a nice set of staggered rial mesh wheels.

we also dropped in an m20b25, out of a late model e30.

there's a full custom exhaust, h&r springs, some aftermarket sways (i cant remember the maker), single headlight conversion, and a bunch of other random goodies... the car came with a nice pile of hartge upgrades, whch ive retained, and will photograph when the car is closer to completion...

this is how she's sitting now... only a few weeks away from being finished.

Scott's (msbehmane36) son, Michael, left, with my son Brian, on the right with two Baurs today in PA. Scott and Michael's project is on the left, my Baur on the right. We look forward to watching their project as it progresses.

Michael, Scott, and Tom

We had a great visit with Michael and Scott, stopping by for about an hour at the storage unit where they are keeping the project Baur.   As you can see from the pics, they have started woring on it, and they do have a long way to go.  Best Wishes for your work, and we hope to see from pics along the way.

Michael has now driven TWO Baurs (one more than me), since I let him take my car for a little spin.  Very nice  friendly folks, and we enjoyed our visit.  We are also indebted to them for providing us with the contact name (Hugh Freet) and phone number for the next stop in our Baurquest:  the Bullenstall Museum, in Mechanicsburg, PA.  Thanks, fellas!

  1. I saw you had a 77 carbed 320i. I was wondering, how hard is it to clean the carb. Because mine has got a rough stuttering idle and I think I have to clean the carb or potentially mess with the fuel line.

    1. I no longer have that car. I never had the issue you describe, and I have never had to clean the carb, other than running carb cleaner through it. I wish I could be of more help. Have you tried running Seafoam through it? Beyond that, I regret that I can't be of more help. Good luck!
