We hear about the M3 dogleg transmission all the time. It is a sought out item, and it generally commands a hefty price tag.
I found this graphic that shows what the fuss is all about, and you can compare it to the stock 5 speed transmission that most of us have. First gear, as you can see is tucked down in the lower left, instead of the upper left corner. I am no authority on this but my understanding is that this is the preferred arrangement for track cars and the like, since first gear is so infrequently used.
