BMW Prototype 1600 Coupe by Baur

This is the extent of what we know about this 1600 Coupe prototype from Baur. Most of this info is from the Classic and Vintage BMW site, and our friend and fellow Baur owner HarryPR is responsible for providing some of this info.  Thanks Harry, and thanks Classic and Vintage BMW!

The following is a very rough translation from the attached magazine clipping.

"A 1600 BMW Coupe: A German coachbuilder has plans to manufacture in September a small coupe series based on the 1600 sedan. The front grille lightly modified, (the horizontal grid is replaced by a single bar) retains despite all the characteristics of the brand. This coupe would be sold in Germany 10 500 DM (about 13 000 F) We do not know yet if it will be any."

Built as a proposal for BMW by Baur, the 1600 Coupe prototype was presented together with a 1600 Cabriolet that was slightly different from the Baur Cabriolets that were eventually produced.

The coupe.. (or coupes, since they might have built two) ..were allegedly destroyed. However, the Baur Cabriolet prototype still exists somewhere in the Netherlands.

Additional pics below from Nick V. in 2002faq:

Nick mentions in his post that he did a search for pics of this prototype a while back, and these were all he could find (including the others above.  So, it appears that event the PICS are a rarity!  Nice job, Nick!
