1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

Vehicle Details

This is for a rare 1985 BMW 3-Series E30-325E BAUR TC. There were only 10,856 cars converted. 1660 323i's and only 430 325e models. BMW officially only sold 7 Baur E30's through the US dealer network. The fact that this car was Imported into the US (California) in 1986, it is a rust free car with some really fun History.VIN - WBAAB510001228677 (I have a full CARFAX for the car)Baur Serial # - B 44788-13Build Sheet - Vehicle informationVIN long - WBAAB510001228677Type code AB51Type 325E (EUR)Dev. series (E30 0)Line 3Body type LIMSteering LLDoor count 2Engine M20Cubical capacity 2.70Power OTransmision HECKGearbox MECHColour ALPINWEISS (146)Upholstery SCHWARZ LEDER (0203)PROD DAT - 1985 - 7 - 2I purchased the car in 2010 and used it as is. I began to add some rare parts like the M tech 1 side skirts and a euro rear apron. I replaced the euro M3 style fog lights since the older ones were pitted out. The paint on the front of the car was a bit worn and I did not want to retain the front federalized side marker lights, so since I did not plan on repainting the car, I replaced the front fenders and hood from a nice donor car in Alpinweiss which nicely cleaned up the front of the car. In addition, I put on cleaner front and rear euro bumpers since the original ones had lost their chrome luster. The car currently has 224,170 miles on the odometer. It drives so well and with the proper care and maintenance to the entire car, it truly drives like an E30 with under 100k miles. In 2015 I had an S14 installed in the car and ran it for 5,000 miles with that power plant. The original M20B27 motor was properly stored until it was reinstalled in the car in November of this year. At that time the following was done during the reinstalation of its original power plant :-New OEM BMW Timing belt kit-Liquimoly oil change-Spark Plugs-Coolant-New Muffler/Exhaust-Original 5 Speed Getrag-Transmission fluidWhile I am making a list, here are some key hot buttons about the car:-Black leather seats (Actual M3 front seats from an 89 M3 and rear leather pass through bench seat)-M Tech 1 OEM side skirts (Rare)-Rear EURO Apron (Rare)-3 Spoke Sport steering wheel-M sport backing Euro Clock-Euro Headlights with working CITY LIGHTS-NEW OEM Sport Trunk spoiler-NEW OEM Rubber roof seals (NO LEAKS)-14" BBS Sport Weaves wheels-Crack free dash-Bilstein Shocks-Vogtland Springs-Blaupunkt Period head unit with Aux plug wire-BMW Front Rubber floor mats-2.93 open differential-Full tool kit-All A/C is there and converted to R134. Needs to be charged.-Working Rear Defrost I used up all of the picture allocation that ebay would allow so if there are any other pics that you need please contact me through ebay or 5038913959. I took pictures of the baur with the top section removed and stored in the trunk with the OEM Baur rails. The rear mechanism works fine as well, and the vinyl covers when the back is down are nicely stored in the trunk. I chose to not fold it down on a cold day in order to not crease the rear window. Not only does this car turn heads because of the rarity of the E30 BAUR TC, but when you shed the top(s), the car maintained its structural rigidity because it has a sold B Pillar, so it does not feel like a noodle like the later E30 full Cabrio cars. This car is ready to drive and enjoy. Many thanks for checking this rare car out and I look forward to passing it on the next lucky owner.

Thanks to James Dougherty for sending me what appears to be a NEW FIND in Northern California: Baur #2598!  Thank you, James!

This is a very special Baur:  it is one of only 25 imported by BMW to North America, 22 of which went to Canada!  This is one of the Canadian Baurs!  See attached chart from Baur Guru Jeroen Janssen!

According to the Baur TC1 registry, 960 of the 4595 BAUR TC 1s have been found. That is 20.89%, 3635 are still missing.

Current BMW 2002 Prices on Bring a Trailer

Thanks to Peter Beren for posting this to the BMW 2002 Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/38681969075/?hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen&multi_permalinks=10159275877559076 Momentum continues in the collector/muscle car market, and 2002s are not exception. Sedans are up 5% in 2021, while Tiis are up a whopping 30% over 2020 prices. 24 sedans traded hands on bringatrailer.com (out of 31 offered); prices ranged from $8500 for a project/runner on the low end, up to $53,500 for a fully restored 68 1600-2. The average price for a car sold this year was $24,259. On the Tii side, 12 out of 15 cars sold, with prices running from $9900 for a project all the way up to $84,502 for a fully restored, box-stock 72 Tii. The average price for a Tii this year is $47,944, but nice daily drivers can still be had in the upper $30s to lower $40s. The really big number cars are the ones that are largely stock, albeit restored. In the six years that I have been tracking prices on BAT, sedans have increased in value an average of 28% annually. Tiis have increased an average of 39.5% annually. But 2002s are really a tale of two different cars, the Roundies, 1973s and earlier, and 74 thru 76 models, the square tail light models. Among sedans, Roundies carry a $4,723 premium over the later models. Among Tiis, this the premium between Roundies and square tails jumps to $9,523. Transmissions are another factor in pricing; 2002s came standard with 4 speed transmissions. A relative few cars came with a 3-speed automatic. Cars with automatics can expect their price to decrease by $2,400. On the other hand, cars that have had 5 speeds command a $5,400 premium (makes the $1500 asking price for a 5 speed, well worth the investment). Out of 241 sedans tracked over the past 6 years, only two are noted to have dogleg 5-speeds; but hold on to your hat’s boys & girls, those dogleg 5-speeds add $8100 to the value of a 2002 over the average price of a 4-speed car (however, with only two samples in the lot, it may not be statistically significant. Or is it?). Out of my own curiosity, I have been tracking whether or not cars have AC or not. AC adds about $1100 to the value of the car. But that is more driven by local climate (change) and your significant other’s preference. People will ask about the values of the Touring hatchbacks, Cabriolets, and Turbos. There have been only four 2002 and three Tii’s sold. 2002 Touring brings $3375 over the average price of a 2002 sedan; while a tii Touring shows a drop in value of $1300? Again, the available sample is not large enough to fairly judge the market values. More transactions have been recorded for Cabriolets. Over this period, they have traded hands for an average price of $56,000. Proving the old auction adage, if the top goes down, the price goes up. Lastly, Turbos. If you want one of these, you’re going to have to pay up, and pay up big. Average price for a Turbo is $132,575. But really nice ones are now pressing $200k. If you want to do the work, runners can be had for under $100k (if the actually sold for that, that is). Disclaimer: I think I have captured most of the BAT prices, but there are probably a few misses, especially early on. I’m sorry if I missed your car. BAT does not make it easy to consistently check back for particular ones. Oh well, the trends exist. BAT buyer premium of 5% on the first $100,000 is not included. However, those cars that are listed from other auction houses, do include the Buyer’s Premium (some approach 20% now). To those who poo-poo BAT, keep in mind that they hammer approx. 70 cars a day during the week, and another 35 per day on Saturday & Sundays. I estimate that their total thru put is approx. 20,000 cars annually. They have an 85% sell rate. You can see my spreadsheet in the files section of this group. If you use this work elsewhere, please give me credit

1984 BMW 318i Baur TC2 e30 - $7,000; Burbank CA Craigslist

1984 BMW 318i Baur TC2 e30 - $7,000; Burbank CA Craigslist
Baur #40428.
Seller's comments:
"Up for sale is my 1984 BMW 318i Baur TC2. Very rare car. Interior is very clean besides the cracked dash. Engine runs well, although very underpowered being 100hp. AC works great, recently replaced compressor and converted to R134a.
Paint needs some love. Car was vandalized with paint stripper during previous ownership. Clean title in hand with no accident history. Rare wheels, and a Zender front spoiler. Not too many Baur e30s made, especially in America. This car is for the e30 enthusiast. This is not your regular 318i e30, so don’t try lowballing me. Asking $7000. Smog is good for another month, and tags are paid until 2021. No trades accepted."

Chrysler LeBaron Convertible: First American Convertible To Appear After the 'Ban the Convertible' Crisis!

"In early 1982, it was released in a convertible version, bringing to the market the first factory-built open-topped domestic vehicle since the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_LeBaron

Convertible Woodie: 1983 Chrysler LeBaron Town & Country

Remember the movie Planes, Trains & Automobiles? One of these cars was in it. Also, one was part of a George Costanza running gag on Seinfeld. The 1980s Chrysler LeBaron was a K-car derivative, and not only did they make a “Woodie” station wagon, but Lee Iacocca’s boys also came up with a Woodie convertible. This 1983 LeBaron is one of them, saw only 1,520 copies made that year, and has the upscale Mark Cross trim package. Located in Poquoson, Virginia, this car is available here on craigslist for $8,800 or best serious offer. Kudos to our guy Ikey Heyman for sending this tip our way!

The FWD K-Car is credited with being the first automobile that saved Chrysler Corp. in the 1980s (the other was the minivan). While it’s not as fondly remembered as Lee’s first sales bonanza (the Ford Mustang), it resulted in 3.5 million reproductions between 1981-89. They came in several varieties and body styles and would even be used in the taxicab trade. Dodge had the Aries, Plymouth had the Reliant and Chrysler had the LeBaron, the fanciest of the species. In 1983, Chrysler built 77,000 LeBaron’s as coupes, sedans, station wagons and convertibles. Of these, 11,000 were Town & Country (Woodie) wagons and just 1,500 were Town & Country convertibles (also Woodie), so the seller’s car falls into limited production territory. Thanks, Chrysler K Car, for the K-Car history lesson.

This 1983 LeBaron is a two-owner car that is said to have traveled just 23,500 miles in its 37 years.  Until 2014, it was a Texas car, then it went to South Carolina where it acquired the South Carolina license plates it currently wears and is now for sale in Virginia. The body looks straight and solid with no signs of rust, and the fake woodgrain siding looks up to par. That’s a key statement because rehabbing or replacing that material can’t be easy or inexpensive. The dark brown paint is nice and shiny and matches well with the leather interior colors. The convertible top boot is beautiful, but somehow the color is off compared to the seats, so I’m guessing this is a replacement and not the one that came with the car.

The seller’s car was decked out with the optional “Mark Cross” two-tone leather interior with the leather maker’s logos prominently affixed. It also features unique door panel inserts with those same badges. The car was well equipped from the factory with just about every convenience you can imagine. Everything is power this and that, including the top. The wire wheel covers add an additional touch of class to a car that already has tons of it. It even has a trunk rack just like the one where Del Griffith mounted his shower curtain rings travel case to in the movie with Steve Martin (one of my personal favorites). Best line of the movie? “oh, that’ll buff right out.”

Mechanically, the car has Mitsubishi’s 2.6-liter “Silent Shaft” engine, paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. As a sign of the 1983’s version of the future, the car is equipped with Chrysler’s Electronic Voice Alert System, a computerized voice that warned drivers about various conditions and used phrases like “a door is ajar” or “your engine oil pressure is low”. I wonder if its nickname is Alexa. This clearly is a head-turning kind of car given all the excesses that were built into the styling. You’re not likely to run into another one of these at Cars & Coffee. They don’t turn up for sale that often. Of the small handful currently advertised on the web, none of the Woodies are offered for more than $10,000. So, the seller’s asking price seems to be about right.
