1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

Is This a Baur? You Decide! Curious Barn Find in the UK!

Here is a curiosity on ebay in the UK.  Thanks to our friend Seventies Skateshop for the link!

Seller claims it is a Baur, but it does not look like a Baur Top Cabriolet:  it has a one-piece soft top, the roll bar has no attachment clips, etc.  Looks like a custom conversion, although the seller claims that it is an early Baur.

There is no hard targa top:  the soft top extends all the way to the front, unlike the Baur.

That roll bar is different from the Baur style:  no clips or attachment latches.
There is too much metal at the C pillar compared to a Baur TC2.

Note the snaps on the C pillar for attaching the soft top.  This is not the way the TC2 Baur soft top attaches.

This is what the top looks like on a genuine factory TC2 Baur:  note the attachment latches, etc.  The car above does not look anything like this.

Seller's comments:
"Up for sale again because of complete timewaster stfiesta1983 who bids , wins, makes No contact, returns calls or answers E Bay

So here we go again ....................

BMW BAUR Cabriolet

1985 318i

2 Door Coachbuilt Conversion E30 Model

This is a True Genuine Barn find !

Was owned by an elderly gent in Norfolk and placed in a barn along with some of his other collection Believed the elderly gent died and the estate was ceased when door was opened nine cars where inside this is one of them , I literally took it from barn and put it on the transporter myself so i know this is genuine

The BMW had No keys was locked up and we had to climb in to get to it i've got a picture of it with about an inch of thick dust on it

Full intention of restoring this back to former glory when it was home

It needs two front wings ( Not Rotten just misplaced Ebay £50.00, New not much more )
Small patch on bottom of inner cill ( Obviously why wing was unbolted )
Rear Passenger Wheelarch repair kit ( Chrome panel is there )
Rear seat has been misplaced also
Cabriolet Roof is ok and complete but is sun damaged and dry ( New on Ebay £195 i have the contact number )

I brought this home several months ago with full intention of going through it and letting my son have it but it's now gathering dust again

I have a Full V5 Logbbok in my name
New Keys cut
We've strained the tank put fresh battery in it charged the battery and she fired up and ran
i 've cleaned it down and all the paintwork is as good as the day it went into the barn
Electrics all work
Locks all work
Opened the boot with new key and found all the grilles, Panels , Trim , Spare Alloy and full tool kit only thing missing is the rear back seat

This really was a Genuine Find even to the point that where the elderly gent bought car was Norwich Garage when i rang the BMW agent in Norwich for the key the parts dept not only had record of the car being sold new by them even had records and could remember the car coming in as it was one of the first Baur Conversions they'd sold bringing it over from Germany for the customer

Sadly have to much to get on with elsewhere so i'm going to let someone else enjoy the car and let it go although i know i'll regret it

If you have any questions on it please feel free to contact me on

07990 550650

Many thanks for taking time to read the advert and enjoy bidding if you decide to."

We are trying to contact the seller.  This does not appear to be a Baur, at least not any Baur that we are familiar with.  Rather it is most likely a custom conversion by a different coach builder, or perhaps a DIY.

Stay tuned!  We will pass along any more info that we are able to glean!

Thank you, Seventies Skateshop! ;)

A Tale of Two Baurs: From Michael Compensis in Germany!

Once again, I wish to express my thanks to the many folks around the world who help our work here at Baurspotting by sending me information on Baurs that they may own, or may have spotted in their travels.   Here is a perfect example: from our friend and fellow Baur owner Michael Compensis in Germany, who sent me this email recently.

"Hi Tom,

i’ve got two Baurs for you. I found one of them while I was searching for my own one. The car I attached is a henna red 318 with Baur number 1438.......

I found this Baur in Germany, near Ingolstadt. Meanwhile this car does not exist anymore.  :-(  When I found it more than one year ago, it was so rusty, that ist was nearly impossible to save it. There was no client to find for this car, so the owner first startet to rebuild it, but gave up one year later an parted the car.  I have not got pictures, but the trunk only existed by the exterior… the bottom was rusted away… same for the front of the car.  That was the reason for me not to buy it."

But then in Oktober 2014 I found "my“ Baur. It’s a 320/6 with Baur Nr. 616. The car was manufactured in 12/78 in Munich, and is first registered in 03/79. I found that car close to the French border, bought it an brought it to Munich where I live.  Now I slightly bring it back to an original-look.

Baur 616 Michael Compensis

I add you some pictures. The first Picture is at the BMW 4-Cylinder Headquarter here in Munich. The other ones are taken on my trip to Italy in September 2015.

Regards from Munich

Michael"

So I did a little research on Baur #616 and I found these pics in the International Baur Registry. The pics were small, so I am unable to enlarge them very much without losing detail.

You can see what Michael means about returning it to its 'original look'.  Compare the front grill in these Registry pics to the grill in Michael's current pics.  The grill with square lights was an after market kit (Taifun was one example) that was available back in the 1980's, but has gone out of fashion today.

I also checked the VIN Decoder:

Louisiana: 1984 BMW 323i Baur TC For Sale - $6500

UPDATE February 20, 2016:   Andy has informed me today that he is reducing his asking price to $4500!

1984 BMW Baur TC for sale - $6500 (Natchitoches)

Our friend and fellow Baur owner, Andy in Louisiana, has decided to part with his 1984 TC2 Baur.  The car is located near Shreveport.  It is a 323i, btw.

It appears that this may be Baur B42035*, but we await confirmation from Andy to be sure.  Baur 42035 is listed the International Baur Registry.  See pics below.

Seller's comments:
"The Baur TC was a factory authorized convertible conversion Rare euro version in driving condition.
$6500 or best offer or interesting trades considered. The color is burgundrot.

Baur is a Karosserie or coachbuilder in Stuttgart, Germany, which has been building BMW convertibles since the 1930s. In 1971 they began production of the safer "targa" style body with the 2002. (Targa was a registered Porsche name, so they had to call it something else) Originally an aftermarket option available through BMW dealers, the E21 3-series TC1 was built with full factory authorization, and covered in the factory warranty. The roll-bar version or "Top Cabrio" (TC) continued with the E30 TC2 even after Baur developed the BMW E30 Convertible design for BMW, and which BMW built.

Baur produced about 1000 e30 Baurs per year for 10 years. There are a number in the US that were personally imported. I bought this one from California on eBay. I've never seen another e30 Baur TC in person in the US. Baurspotting website has more information and a map of e21 and e30 Baurs.

I've owned the car for about 5 years. Mechanically I've given the car a tune up( wires, spark plugs, rotar, distributor cap)
New front tie rods
Replaced shocks 1/2 shafts
Returned to stock ride with oem springs and new shocks
Fixed odometer about 10,000 miles ago. It was broken when I purchased car, so mileage is not accurate.
Dash has a couple of cracks
Front seats have holes
rear seat is fine
Blinkers do not switch off automatically.
Tops work fine, but rear section has small tear.
Has BBS rear spoiler
Has BMW e30 IS front spoiler, not currently attached
Some minor spare parts included

Mechanically the car is pretty solid. It would benefit from a paint job, dash, and seat covers.

I'm not a mechanic but I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can. I'm sure I missed some of the good and the bad. If interested, you should come inspect and drive it yourself."

Good luck with your sale, Andy!
