1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

Redundant Safety Systems Redux! Thank You, Sammy in the Canary Islands!

We have written a number of times here in Baurspotting about the importance of using redundant safety systems whenever you are going to work under a car.  I never get tired of posting this safety message, especially since I know we haven't reached everyone yet.  Every month we read another story about someone who was seriously injured--- or worse--- due to a falling jack, jack stand or even a lift.

Check out this pic, posted today by Sammy S. N. of the Canary Islands.  Note the placement of the tire and rim underneath the chassis at the driver's side rear jacking point!  THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT!  Kudos, Sammy!  You can also see the jack stand under the rear subframe.  If, for some unforeseen reason, that jackstand fails, the car can fall no further than to land on top of that rim.  That will give anyone working under the car an extra margin of safety in a worst case scenario event.  Please, fellas, follow Sammy's example:  throw a tire under the car when you are under there. Hopefully you may never need it..... but it will be there if you DO need it!

Our hope is that by posting this safety message at every opportunity we may prevent a tragedy.  We already know that this effort has been effective.  A good friend of Baurspotting just emailed me a few weeks ago, to thank me for telling him exactly what I am telling you again here tonight:  throw a tire and rim under the car near where you are working!  In his case, the jack was accidentally released by a neighbor was was absent-mindedly fiddling with the handle while they talked----- nobody saw that coming!   The tire which he had placed under the chassis prevented the car from landing on his face!  It was the ONLY thing that prevented the car from landing on his face!

Big PROPS to Sammy S. N. in the Canary Islands for showing us how it is done!!  Thank you, Sammy!

You KNOW what Department THIS one is from:  The WTF Dept!  Real or fake?  ;)

Bruce H's former Baur from Atlanta, GA.

1600 Voll Cabrio at Oktoberfest 2014

Thanks to m6smitten in the 2002faq for this pic taken at Oktoberfest 2014 in Beaver Creek, Colorado last week.  I believe it was one of 18 cars in the judged Concours competition.

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/155341-ofest/

Our friend, Dirk d. G. added the following info:
"Prior to winning second price in the concours, Elliott completed a 1,200 mile Colorado driving tour (which included a climb to the Pikes Peak summit) in his 1600 cabrio."

Thank you, Dirk!

What is Oktoberfest?
Thanks to visionaut, also in the 2002faq, for this succinct summary:
For FAQers that aren't BMWCCA members -- Oktoberfest is the annual 'whole-club gathering' event for Club members, held at rotating locations around the USA each year during summer/fall. It's a full week of fun activities celebrating the marque. Last year it was held in California, alongside the famous Monterey & Pebble Beach automotive events. This year it finally returned to Colorado, and it was more of a smaller, social OFest. Many FAQers might remember the last time Colorado was host to the event, in 2002 in Keystone CO, when a massive number of 2002s showed - since our 02 was honored as the 'marque' BMW model that year.

Thanks to m6smitten and visionaut for the above!

1974 BMW 2002 tii - Cabrio?? $5200 (Westfield ma)

Thanks to my friend and fellow Baur owner Afonso for the 'heads up' on this cabrio in nearby Westfield, MA!

1974 BMW 2002 tii - $5200 (Westfield ma)

Check out the pics, however.  Caveat Emptor.  Do you see how the windshield is curved above the little vent window?  We have discussed this before.  True Voll Cabrios by Baur have a sharper angle where the vent meets the windshield.  this looks to me like a homemade convertible.... not a true Voll Cabrio by Baur.  A chop top convertible.

What do you think?
Note the sharper angle where the vent window meets the windshield.

Here is Mike S's cabrio for comparison.

Here is the text of the ad:
"1974 2002 TII runs and drives good. A blast to drive. Gets lots of looks and compliments. Older restoration. Needs re-freshing . Driving project. Clean MA title."

Notice that the ad makes no mention of "cabrio".  He is not listing it as a convertible.

Here are the rest of the pics from the ad:

Hmmm.  Not a pretty sight.

Note all the rivets (?) above the trunk.

So... caveat emptor.  this may not be what it appears to be at first glance.  Perhaps someone can check it out for us, and report back what they find?

Stay tuned!

Peter V.U. of The Netherlands has provided us with another update on his 'build a baur' project, showing some progress on welding the Baur top on!   Keep up the great work, Peter!

"Today's work welding one side of the baur top.  It fit perfect."----Peter v. U., in Facebook today.

Great job, Peter!  Kudos!
