1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

History of a Baur in the US: Baur #917

History of Baur #917, a 1979 320/6  (VIN WBA29510006682403) with pics along the way.

Baurspotting is pleased to announce that we have made some significant progress toward one of our goals.  Our stated purpose is to identify and locate all the TC1 Baurs in the US.  We continue to work toward that goal, and we have confirmed the identity and location of 43 Baurs.  We have strong leads on 11 more, for a total of 54.  We continue to work on tracking down about 30 or 40 other reports/rumors of Baurs all over the country.

But the news today is of a slightly different kind of achievement.  Thanks to the help of a number of folks out there, we have been able to not only identify and locate Baur #917, but we have also been able to trace its history through 5 owners, going back to at least 2001, supplemented with pictures taken along the way.  Here is the story:

1) History prior to 2001 is unknown presently:  but in 2001 Baur #917 was owned by Cosmopolitan Motors of Seattle, WA.
2) 2001-2005 Bimmerforums member tcm326 of Massachusetts purchased the car from Cosmopolitan and brought it east to Massachusetts.  The picture below is one he sent me this week.  He sent me about 7 others, btw.

3) 2005-2008 tcm326 sold the car in February 2005 to Joe C. of Wilmington, MA.  the pics below were posted by Joe C. (as JoeBaur) on the e21 tricord site.  (These same pics were included in the pics from tcm326 (above) but they were posted on the tricord site by JoeBaur.)

http://e21.tricord.be/registry/index.php?view=182
There are more pics at the site above.

4) in 2008 Joe C sold the car to my friend, Josh L. of Mystic CT.   I met Josh when he contacted me about an E21 parts car I have.  In January 2010, Josh had the Baur for sale, and I went and looked at it.  I decided not to buy it at that time, and bought Baur #4154 from bimmerforums member 'vev' in northern Virginia about a week later.   The pic below was take at Josh's home in Mystic, CT, and can be found posted in the International Baur Registry.  http://www.baur-tc1.de/tc1-0501-bis-1000.html

5) In 2010, Josh sold the Baur to bimmerforums member mstecker (who also owns Baur #3091, a beautiful cranberry example).  mstecker was listed as being in Philadelphia PA, but thanks to tcm326, we learned that he has the cars in Concord MA.  He apparently splits his time between Philadelphia and Concord for job-related reasons.

The picture below was posted in bimmerforums last year by mstecker, with the following comment:
"It's been a hoot to drive, and runs really strong, but the bodywork it needs probably won't justify its value when done. Since I bought it, I've put in a set of well-used but sound Recaros, and generally cleaned it up.
Here's a pic of her sucking juice from the Electric Vehicle charging post at the hotel where I live during the week:

Baurspotting has been able to develop some information on a number of other Baurs here over the past 10 months, notably vev's wide body Baur in VA, conkitchen/doc john's Baur in California/Arizona, and msbehmane36's Baur in PA.

In addition to identifying and locating all the TC1 Baurs in the US, we hope to continue to develop as much history on each car as we can, as you have seen above.

Stay tuned, we are just getting started!

Overlooked 1979 320/6 US Baur in Arizona....FOUND!!

I came across this overlooked thread the other night from 12/20/2008:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1141800

"hey guys I just bought a 79 baur 320/6 in very rough shape for a very good price. What should I do with it? I was thinking on pulling all the euro bits off of it and putting them on my federalized 323i and then parting the entire car. It has a couple rust spots, the cloth rear convertible top is falling apart but all the mechanicals of the top work perfectly. The solex carb was replaced with a holley downdraft. The car doesnt run. Can anyone get any info off the VIN other than the standard bmwz-1 stuff? Here is the VIN: 6627596
*Update with Pics*

Pics were taken with my cell phone camera and it was getting dark so not the best quality

I don't know how this one got missed, but I don't see it listed in jeroen's original listing of Baur TC1s in the US. It appears that it has been overlooked when the list of US Baurs was compiled.

Jeroen did even comment in the thread, so he does know about this car:
"It's an old one, the 118th build Baur.
Baurnumber: A70118-1 (A7 is the standard startnumber)
VIN: 6627596
Typ: 320/6
Roofcolour: Sonnenland black
Exterior: Polaris (grey)
Interior: Stoff black
Glass: not tinted
Sold new to: Mister Christmann, Worms Germany.
It's the 9th oldest E21 Baur known to the Baur registry."

So this appears to be yet another new Baur to add to our list!

I am happy to report that we have now FOUND this Baur!  I have an update coming soon:  it is owned by Mark R. in Scottsdale AZ.  He has sent me some pics that I will be posting soon.

Stay tuned!

Baur TC1s in the US: Interim Status Report II

I have made some updates to the Baur Interim Status Report to reflect some of the new information that has come to us.
We now have 43 confirmed Baur TC1s in the US; we have 11 more that we know exist but we haven't confirmed the Baur numbers yet. That makes a total of 54. That is an increase of 6 from our last report in July, 2011.
That number includes 3 baurs that we have moved from other categories: for example, we had no Baur plate number for the Beaufort Baur previously, and we now know the plate number, and that it has been moved to LA from SC.
We now have 28 more unconfirmed reports/rumors of TC1 Baurs. The Baur rumored to be in Scottsdale AZ has now beeen confirmed as Baur #118.
We also still have 11 Baur numbers from Jeroen's original US Baur TC1 list for which we have no information yet. Jeroen's other list of 25 that were largely destined for Canada, but some of which came to the US, are still not accounted for also. Not to mention the undiscovered barn finds that are out there, perhaps!

Baur TC1s in the US summary: we have 43 confirmed; 11 probables; 28 rumored; 11 + 25 unaccounted for; and an unknown number of 'undiscovereds'.

Stay tuned.

Eric B's Two Baurs in LA

Eric has very kindly forwarded some more pics of his other Baur (he owns the Beaufort Baur also).  He bought it because it was a rust-free example, and it looks like he is doing a nice job of restoring it.  He told me:
"I am in the process of restoring my '82 w/ an M20 2.7 Stroker w/ Turbo capable of 27lbs of boost (currently in the paint shop; 'granite silver' w/ all chrome or silver to be blacked out). "

Looks like a great project, Eric, and thanks for sharing the info and the pics!

Update: Beaufort Baur and Friend (LA Baur)

Eric B hs sent me info on his TWO Baurs. In the attached pic, the white Baur on the right is the Beaufort Baur (plate #982, also shown).

The Baur on the left is a 1982 323i that he is restoring, Baur plate #A003374-11.

I believe those Baur numbers are both previously unknown to us! So thank you, Eric!

If my count is correct, that will bring us officially to 50 confirmed E21 TC1 Baurs in the US!
#982 was previously counted among our 'reported but unconfirmed' Baurs.
#3374 was completely unknown to us!

Beaufort Baur: FOUND!!!

UPDATE: 2/27/2012
EXCITING NEWS:  BEAUFORT BAUR HAS BEEN PURCHASED BY VINTAGE MOTORSPORTS GROUP!
Check it out here:

You may (or may not) recall the discussion months ago about a Baur (pictured below in the sidebar) that was found in an old ad on the True Gear Head website.

Here is the ad:
"1978 BMW 323i Baur Convertible – was for sale in True Gear Head: $3500 Rare European-only gray market e21 BMW 3 series Baur conversion. White w/blue interior, 5 speed (non sport), Stahl header, Recaro seats, Alpina gauge cluster, Alpina steering wheel, Alpina Shift Knob, New DieHard Battery, Runs strong, daily driver or ready to restore. NO structural rust (towers, jack points, etc) Just a few spots. Located near downtown Beaufort. "

I have posted this in the sidebar of my blog since about February. I contacted the folks at True Gear Head about the ad, but they had no info on it. We had a rumor that it may have gone to Georgia, but we could never pin that down.

Today, as you may have read in the "Wanted: Crushed or Alive" bimmerforums thread, I received an email from Eric B. in California, who is the guy who bought the car from Beaufort. It currently resides in his shop, and, if I understood his email correctly, he owns ANOTHER Baur also! (See pic above.)
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1606105&page=2
I have responded to Eric's email, and I hope to have more info from him to report: car details, Baur plate number, how he learned about us, etc.

This did give me a chuckle this morning, btw, when I was thinking..... who was the more surprised.... Eric when he saw his car posted with this headline:
"The Baurhunter: Have you seen this Baur? Beaufort, SC", complete with a picture of his car.....

.... or me, when I received his email stating he's the owner of the famous Beaufort Baur!!

So stay tuned. More to come.

UPDATE: the seller has now changed the pic in the craigs list ad to these terrible shots (above). I called him tonight. The car he has for sale is NOT a Baur, nor even a convertible. He said the original pic was given to him by the previous owner.  He claimed all the pics were the same car..... But it is very clear that there are two different cars depicted. Sorry about this false alarm. I will remove the from the Baurs for sale page also.

Thanks to alert bimmerforums member 87iSee who posted this in the e21 forum today!  If it is as listed (a 1982 320i), that may be a US version, of which, as far as we know, only 3 were officially imported to the US.  All the others were grey market cars.  Stay tuned as we try to track this one down!

This is also now posted on our "Baurs For Sale " page here in Baurspotting.
