Sergio believes that this is the only 320 in Colombia!

The Merrick Baur Is For Sale: 1981 BMW 318i Baur Convertible/Targa TC1 - $9995 (Centerport)

1981 BMW 318i Baur Convertible/Targa TC1 - $9995 (Centerport)

Thanks to our friend Layne Wylie in Texas for the heads up on this Baur for sale in NY!  Our friend Ingo. P. has decided to sell his 1981 318i Baur.  You may recall that we have written about this Baur several times over the years because it had been spotted on Long island, but we could not locate the car or the owner.  Here are links to a couple of our previous posts on this Baur*.  This is a beauty, folks!

I love this color. This car is very tempting to me.... except that I want to STAY married, if you know what I mean!  ;)

Baur #3136

1981 BMW
fuel: gas
odometer: 74000
title status: clean
transmission: manual
Text of Craigslist ad:
Up for sale is an extremely rare European model 1981 BMW E 21 318i Baur TC1 convertible/targa.

BMW did not produce their own convertibles for the E 21 line and commissioned the German Baur coach building company to produce these vehicles (only 4595 ever made, built in Stuttgart Germany) which were then sold in the BMW dealership show room. This car is an original European model with European bumpers, certainly more beautiful than the big 5 mph US mandated bumpers. Factory BBS rims, BBS front air dam and rear Zender spoiler. The roof consists of a fiberglass panel that can be removed separately from the rear convertible section. The fiberglass panel fits neatly in the trunk. The system works extremely well and is weather tight.

This is an original 74,000 mile vehicle with documentation going back to 1981 and a Carfax report showing no accidents. Extremely dry with minimal rust and very straight (apart from a couple of grocery store door dings). The original "Zypressengrun Metalic" paint is in good condition, although it appears it was reclear-coated at some point.

This car runs and drives beautifully with its original fuel-injected 105 hp strong M 10 engine mated to the original four-speed transmission that shifts tightly and smoothly. A reliable daily driver. The rear brakes were just replaced with all German ATE parts and are strong and straight. The steering is tight and direct as well.

I just finished most of the upholstery in the original color, although not the original fabric ($1150). The dash has some cracks in it and a couple of items have to be sorted out on the instrument panel such as the LED clock, the original lighter and radio. The original carpet and door panels are in place and presentable. The interior is complete and nice but needs a bit of attention here and there.

The original owners manual as well as German literature is in the glove box. I bought this car from the second owner who drove it less than 200 miles per year, the Carfax report shows this. This car has always lived underneath a car cover in a garage since it was brought here from Germany in 1987. A clean New York title is in my hand as well and the car just passed the safety inspection and is registered.

I'm not in a hurry to sell this car and don't need to. I'm also not too flexible on the price. This car is absolutely wonderful to drive and always get a "thumbs-up" every time we take her out. As an extremely rare unmolested car, I am only looking to have it go to a serious classic car/BMW enthusiast. And, as a sidenote, the last e21 Baur convertible/targa that sold on the website "Bring A Trailer" was a non original US-model that sold for $5000 more than the asking price in this ad.

Thank you Layne and .... Best wishes on your sale, Ingo!

Tedster Spots Baur #70 in Hungary!

UPDATE!  SMALL BAUR WORLD!*

Our friend Ted Kalman (host of Tedfest in Ontario, Canada) is visiting relatives in Hungary this month, and he just sent us these pics of a Baur he spotted in the neighborhood.  Nice find, Tedster:  looks like a very good example with a very low Baur number:  #70!

Here are Ted's comments:
Driving to a cousin's house and I came across this 1978 BMW 318 4 speed with 150,000KM. An old Hungarian gentleman came out to talk to me about the car that originally came from a german owner and he did not want to sell it to me. It's #70 and in very good condition. The interior was redone in black and red old Recaro's. I loved it! Tedster

Here are a couple of pics of Baur #70 from the International Baur Registry, apparently when it was still registered in Germany:

Thanks again, Ted, and enjoy your trip!

*Small Baur World Update:  we know this Baur!  Our friends spotted this Baur two years ago..... but we didn't know the owner! You nailed it, Ted!  Baurspotter of the Week: The Tedster,  Ted Kalman!  Here is the post from 2015:

1973 Cabrio Targa by Baur For Sale in the UK!

Thanks to our friend, Bob Kauffman for the heads up on this Cabrio Targa for sale in the UK!  Interesting write-up, although it is not completely accurate.  The article implies that the purpose of the 'bar in the roof' was to reduce 'scuttle shake', which it does, but that is NOT the "raison d'être"! It is, in fact, a roll bar that was designed to address the safety concerns about convertibles in a rollover accident that were prominent at the time. A number of governments, including the US government, were considering banning convertibles due to this perceived safety risk.  They never did ban convertibles, but the threat was serious enough to the industry that American factory production of convertibles ceased altogether for about 7 years,  with the last factory convertible being the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado.  Once the 'crisis' had passed, factory production resumed in the early 1980's.  The BMW response to this crisis was the introduction of the Baur roll bar design in their convertibles, starting with the 2002 Cabrio Targas, and continuing with the E21 Top Cabriolets (TC1), E30 TC2s, a one-off TC3, and the E36 TC4s.

Description

The BMW 2002 series is important in the history of BMW for several reasons; not the least of which being that it brought the company out of near bankruptcy in the 1960’s and put BMW on the map in the United States. It was the ancestral grandfather to the BMW 3 Series and was produced from 1968 to 1976. German BMW importer Max Hoffman is credited with the car's creation. He had suggested to BMW's engineering director that a 2.0 litre engine should be installed into the small two-door 1602 to improve performance and emissions. The engineering director argued that the larger motor would not fit, but Hoffman countered that it certainly would fit; if he refused to put the motor in, Hoffman would personally take a car with the new engine to George Meier, a famous motorcycle racer, for installation. Almost immediately this brought action - and the resulting 2002 (named after the new motor's displacement) was popular in its first year on sale.
This BMW 2002 is one of only 354 examples manufactured in righthand drive format and only 260 of these were early ‘round rear tail-light’ examples of which this is one. Conversions on these outstanding vehicles were by coachbuilder Karosserie Baur in Stuttgart at a time when ‘wind in the hair’ motoring was rare. Baur retained a ‘T’ bar in the roof design helping dramatically to reduce any scuttle shake. With only four previous keepers this BMW has recently had a brake overhaul and has been re-shod on new tyres; a new battery and interior carpet have also been fitted. Supplied with a V5C registration document together with an MoT test certificate valid until 11th August 2018 (no advisories) plus original handbook, sales brochure and a collection of invoices, this BMW 2002 Cabriolet is ready to show or to be enjoyed with the roof down on the open road.
