1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

Baurhunting: Have You Seen This Baur? SOLVED!

I posted similar to this in bimmerforums back on April 16, 2011.
This photo was taken at Lime Rock Park on Vintage weekend in September 2010. I should have been there, but I didn't make it. Were you there that day? Do you know this car? It is a beauty!

Any ideas or suggestions, please email me @ tom82baur@gmail.com
bmw-bauer-targa

This mystery has been solved!  We posted this pic a couple of times in the "Baur TC1s in the US " thread in bimmerforums, (February 23, 2011 and April 16, 2011) without any success in identifying it.  Then, on April 19, 2011, John M from New Jersey posted the following:

"Hey,

That's my 82 baur. I was at the lime rock historics on Sunday Labor Day weekend last year. Same car that was on the Martha's Vinyard Ferry.

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...3#post20882193

John M"

Thank you, John, for helping us clear that up!  Once again, it appears that we are closing in on at least locating and, in some cases, actually identifying many of the US Baurs.  We have reports on roughly 75 US TC1 Baurs... and many of those reports remain just that:  reports.  We have attached pins to the Google map showing where they have been reported, and there are still many of those that have not been further identified.

Some of those 'reports', as in this case, have turned out to be cars that were already known and identified to us... and we just needed some confirmation on that. The Baur belonging to msbehame36 is another example.  That car has turned up in 3 or 4 different places, advertised for sale a couple of times over the past few years in NJ and PA.  Conkitchen's white 'mystery' Baur is yet another example... turning up with Oregon plates in one photo, and then winding up in his garage in California.  The 1979 320/6 that I almost bought last year has been shown to be in the Boston area in 2008, Mystic CT in 2010, and was last seen in the Philadelphia area.  I am sure that we will turn up more examples of this kind of thing as we proceed.

On the other hand, a quick review of the pins on the Google map will reveal quite a number of reports/sighting that we haven't been able to pin down.  Yet.  So we still have lots of work to do, Baurhunters.   :)

I haven't even included, of course, those Baurs that are secreted away in someone's barn, garage, or bank vault!  Needless to say, those cars will remain elusive and hard to find.

Going Global II

If you are just joining Baurspotting, please check out our archives for the "Going Global" post back in February. We have been keeping track as Baurspotting spreads across the globe... Over 40 countries have logged on. !! We are happy to report that we have had views on all continents, with one exception: Where are the Baurspotters on Antarctica??? :). Ok, so there may not be that many Baurs on Antarctica...... YET!! None have been reported there so far. But you never know!

:)

If you haven't seen the beautiful Lapisblau example in the post "All the Baurs",.... March 29, 2011... please check it out now. I don't care for those chrome wheel well covers (they tend to trap moisture and hence encourage rust), but I hope to have my Baur look something like that some day!! Check the rest of them out too! Some really neat examples on there.

Anyway, a warm welcome to all who have joined us from all over the world, and we look forward to sharing our passion for these exciting and unique cars with even more enthusiasts around the globe! Despite our differences of race, creed, culture, geography, whatever.... We do share a love for an exhilarating drive in an open top car on a twisty road! Welcome All!! :)

1981 E21 Baur ad... April Fool's Joke!

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn251/jgerock/Roundel%20Dec%201984%20scans/BaurE21March81.jpg

I got a chuckle out of this. It is apparently an ad from the UK.

:)

Two clues.... The article appeared around March 1981; the contact person listed is "Miss April Wurst", a play on 'April First".   An April Fool's Joke!

71 yr old, under a lift.

Very sad.

Here is a video showing how easily jackstands can fall:

It can happen to you. Think safety.

Safety First, Safety Last, Safety Always!

All credit to Tom D., Frederick, and 'funola', and many others who are working/thinking about this, for the benefit of all.  Great work!
--------------------

I have compiled a little of what you guys have done, and I want to post it here--- and a bunch of other places, too---- in case anyone missed it.  It is important stuff to know, and too important to miss.

OK Boys and Girls, we have some of our Best Guys working on this, in the interest of keeping everyone safe.  Please read it:

From ‘funola”, Peachparts Mercedes Shopforum Diesel Discussion

I dug out my Craftsman ratcheting jack stand and gave it a close look and a quick test. Mine is the 3 ton and I assume the 4 ton is of simillar design. I raised it halfway, crouched, stood and balanced myself on it, reached down and yanked upward on the handle. To my surprise, it (and I) dropped all the way to the bottom! That was very sobering! Jack stand with pins will never do that! I was expecting it to catch on the next tooth on the rack but not so. The handle only needs to be raised upwards 3/4" to release the rack for it to drop. I'll try to find the owners manual and see what warnings/ instructions are provided.

With the car's weight (let's say 3000 lbs) on the jackstands, how much force is required to hit the handle at such an angle and cause it to go up 3/4"? Any mechanical engineers here want to take a stab at it? The jack release handle is 4.5" long.

From Tom D.... bimmerforums E21 1975-83

it's actually just a simple machine and the mechanical advantage can be calculated. however, one factor is missing, the small section of the lever on the other side of the fulcrum. lets assume it's 1 inch. the handle is 4.5 inches. the car is 3000 lb.. and has a 50/50 weight ratio. each corner carries a load of 750lb. the mechanical advantage is 4.5 therefore it would take a total of 167 lb. of force to release the lock.

3000/4 = 750
750/1 * 1/4.5 = 167

keeping in mind that work in is always equaled to work out, so in order to raise 750 lb. 3/4". you would have to exert 167 lb. on the lever for a distance of 3 3/8 "

4.5/1 * 1/.75 = 3.375

This also assumes no damage to the ratchet or pawl and a full engagement... If you saw the pic of the junk stand I found IN USE you have to question yourself... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot are you thinking????

Thanks Tom D.

fjk, jr.  (Frederick J. Klorcyzk, jr.)

------------------------------------------------------

From Tom D. again bimmerforums E21 1975-83

i finally got a chance to look at my ratchet stands and my calculations although are correct, the operation of the ratchet is not like i imagined it.

the corner weight is still 750 lb.

the lever is 5.5" on one side of the fulcrum and 1.5" on the other. that makes the mechanical advantage 8.25

the pawl only needs to lift the weight 1/16" and move sideways 1/8" to disengage.

so without allowing for friction it would only take 90 lb. of force to lift and 1/2" of travel on the handle to move it off it's perch.

not good!

I couldn't find my owners manual so went to Sears to look it up. I told the salesman about the accident in CT and he knew about it. He was very helpful and made a copy of the manual from a jack stand on the shelf for me.

Here it is. There's no warnings about not bumping the handle or positioning it with the handle facing away from the car.

Jack Stand Safety IV

While this blog is dedicated to the BMW Baur, we will continue to publish any info we feel relevant to promoting safety in the car hobby. Nothing is more important than keeping our fellow gearheads safe.

Info from Christian's dad. Check these out.... Strong sturdy, no moving parts. Worth a look?

Surprise! Are ratchetting Jack stands really as safe as you think they are? Try this!

Very interesting post.... Thank you very much. I would like to post your results in other forums to continue to raise consciousness on the subject of safety... As well as productive discussion. Yours is a most interesting experiment, worth looking at some more, in my opinion.

Video: Falling Jack Stands

It is an ad for a creeper but... a picture is worth a thousand words.

Think safety:  first, last, always.

Another Avoidable Tragedy

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...rfatality.html

March 27, 2011 Bremerton WA.

Post this everywhere. This poor guy evidently didn't get the message, and now he never will.

Sad.

Stay safe, fellas. It has happened again.

Redundant safety systems.  NEVER trust a jack.  Chock the wheels.  Sturdy safe jack stands under strong, solid points.  Rock the car BEFORE you go under it.  Throw your spare under a wheel to give yourself a couple of extra inches.  It can save your life.

Most important of all:  don't think it can't happen to you.

New US E21 Baur Find!

UPDATE: this Baur has now been identified! It belongs to Afonso of northern CT. For more on this Baur, including pics of Afonso and I together with our cars, see blog post for July 10, 2011: Two E21 Baurs at Ct valley Chapter Show and Shine, Manchester, CT.

Thanks to davey101 in E30 bimmerforums we have what appears to be a new find: a silver 320/6 at a BMW Show in Manchester CT (my backyard) in 2009. A great looking example! Baur #0048; listed In The international Baur Registry, but not listed as a US Baur! That makes a New Find, as far as I can tell at this moment.
